I would have to call that an "improper sound". "Locking up" is a bad thing.

I can't agree... I'm firmly in the "tension = bad" camp.

The problem with kiai, and other shouts, is that it can also significantly interfere with fluidity and, if inappropriately applied, can lock you up to doing stupid television-like pauses.

Not just improperly applies, but actually improperly done.

Go to this site... http://taijiworld.com/download/Free_books.htm And download the Internal Gung-fu Volume One\Two. Those books have good info about Qi\Ki. Read that stuff before you add any replies about whether Qi exists or not.
