I like to try and exercise as much as I can at home between Karate training and I was wondering what exercises are best that don't require equipment.

I currently do push-ups, sit-ups and squats, any suggestions/tips?

Britnoob,

I would suggest 2 books. I'm the same and like to exercise as much as I can at home, i bought these 2 books and they have worked wonders. The links to them are below:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/1880336596/qid=1093789641/sr=2-1/ref=sr_2_11_1/026-4187570-2576440

Both are excellent books, they really are. The second one "dynamic strength" is basically full of isometric style workouts to help build and tone the body and is designed specifically for martial arts practitioners. Its full of pictures making it easy to follow and also tells u exactly what muscle groups ur exercising and how they will benefit ur martial arts skills.

The first book "solo training" really is the best book u can buy when it comes to training and home. Its just a gr8 guide that will really develop u as a fighter, it also includes some core exercises that are essential to a good martial artist. Both books are clear and consise and will really help as a fighter, trust me. Read the reviews on them and u'll see what I mean.

Hope this helps :)

I know that you're looking for excercises that don't use equipment... :D

...but a cheap piece of kit to buy is a gym ball (also known as Swiss ball or a Physio ball). It's those big inflatable balls, that look like an oversized beach ball.

They're great for excercising with, are cheap and don't take up much room to store.

What do you actually do with them though? What muscles would they work?

Great links for the books, Rich. Ta!

dips between two chairs. dips are some of the best upperbody building exercises. also, if you want to hit your legs, squats without weights wont do much. if you run a lot, especially up hills and things like that, youll build them up real nice.

Pushups, squats, lunges, and dips. I would also buy a doorway chinup bar and do pull ups or chins. Ot find a sturdy tree with a branch parallel to the ground to do them. Do situps with your legs inclined, arms wide and close. Do crunches, but if you get the bar, then do hanging leg raises from the bar for abs.

I do push ups on my stairs in my house, when they get boring, I put my feet up on the wall and do push ups, I do the same for dips.

Some great suggestions here.

What are dips?

I didn't realise you could get doorway chin up bars. What muscles do chin ups work? I'd like to increase the mass and strength in my arms and shoulders. Chin ups work teh biceps don't they?

Are there any bodyweight exercises that work the top of the arm/shoulder (deltoids is it?)
