If you're extremely worried about getting hit with a punch to the head you shouldmove into the punch. 90% of the punch comes in the last fraction on a second that you throw that punch. By moving in you cut off the source. the forehead is the toughest part of your heasd so if you are gonna take a punch take it to the forehead. :karate:

Just an observation. Ad I noticed you mentioned that not all of you classmates wore headgear. The same is true at my school of the adults. (All of the kids are reguired to wear helmets.)

Of the adults I can honestly say that those who chose to wear helmets are also those with the highest levels of education. Does this bespeak anything about the wisdom of protectiong your head?

Oh man, sparring without a mouth piece is stupid. Unless you enjoy gumming your food. :spitlaugh:

Even if your school doesn't allow face contact accidents do happen.

Kenpo karate has a saying..."Meet force with force". If you guys decide before hand that there will be no face contact...then there should be no face contact.

I personally advise against sparring w/o face contact....its an unrealistic way to train cuz that will be a target that 90% of your potential attackers will attack first, and you need to know how to defend against it.

I am against practicing full contact to the face, unless you are ready to take some injury..some peeps train this way, but make sure you are ready for it before training in that fashion.

Hope that helps

Hasta!!

You know, it's funny .... I just came across this thread and it's reminding me to get out soon and get myself a mouth guard!!

I lost mine months ago and have been sparring without it. Thing is my instructor told me that I have improved blocking kicks and punches to the head. Maybe cos' I want to keep the pearly whites that I was born with :brow: .... he hasn't noticed that I have been sparring without one, but I guess the lack of having my mouth guard has improved my blocking defenses (....like I said I am getting one SOON I don't advise it!)

The summer Shadow was a kitten I was having a major problem with oral thrush. After every class I would carefully wash and disenfect my mouthpiece. But I kept loosing them. I was starting to feel really scatterbrained

One day we went toy hunting. Between 2 piecies of furniture I found 6 toy fur mice, 3 little balls, 5 mouthpieces, and an assortment of other small objects. :uhoh:Guess they looked like they would be nice to play with.
