Oni Posted August 29, 2004 Posted August 29, 2004 I am from Cheshire and I have been to 1 club which is close to my home Cheshire Martial Arts Centre they teach both JJ and WC I am not sure if they teach Aikido. I researched the club on the net found out costs, instructors, styles, training times. From the site I found out that in Wing Chun I would be training in Yip Man's style (Bruce Lee's style before JKD) and that my Sifu would be Tong Lui (if anyone knows him or has heard of him let me know please) Lessons would cost £5 per lesson and are on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 8.30 til 10.00pm on both days.( That is a Group session) I would prefer to do Individual Lessons as I learn more quicker, I found out that I can do the lesson when I want at 7.30 til 9.00pm at a cost of £10+ per lesson that needs confirming. I am only mentioning what info I got on Wing Chun as I think that is the style I most want to learn. BTW Do you study Wing Chun and if not what other MA's do you do? Rich_2k3 Posted August 29, 2004 Posted August 29, 2004 (edited) Obvisouly the MA u train should reflect what u are wanting to gain, be it self-defence, fitness, sport etc. u seem to be interested in Wing Chun Kung fu. The best thing to do is go down to the club and watch a lesson, see what u think, u might decide that it doesnt suit what ur after, if so u could try somthing else or u might love it! The martial art that I always suggest to ppl is Kyokushin Karate. Its a very powerful form of karate, with alot of full contact sparring and body conditioning. It covers a wide spectrum of interests, for example fitness, self defence and sport. An example of someone who does Kyokushin is Dolf Lungdrem (if u dont know, its the guy who played the russian boxer in Rock III). I dont actaully practice this art but i've seen it in action and it really is a quality martial art, and I intend to practice it in the near future. p.s u'll find this site helpful if u want to know about wing chun: http://www.wingchun.org.uk/selfdefence/home.htm Also this site is excellent if ur after info on a paticular martial art, its got 40 different ones listed: http://www.martial-arts-info.com/ Edited August 29, 2004 by Rich_2k3 "When my enemy contracts I expand and when he expands I contract" - Bruce Lee

Yes, I train in Wing Chun, but I have only recently started it. I also take Karate and Kobudo, and have trained in Aikido in the past. Even though you'd prefer private/individual lessons, I'd always recommend to people to take at least some group lessons, especially if they are just starting out in martial arts. My karate instructor gives private lessons, but students have to attend a minimum number of regular class lessons before being able to take private lessons. Even if people are embarassed about training in front of others, I always feel that there are a lot more benefits to training ina group, epsecially for beginners. Training in a groups helps a person to get used to partnering up with people of all abilities, shapes and sizes. On another matter, there are some interesting articles about Wing Chun on the club site where I train: Akhtars Martial Arts Academy See also: Wing Chun Kuen Good luck with your choice of martial art - I hope your first training session goes well! italian_guy Posted August 31, 2004 Posted August 31, 2004 Whats Kali?Kali or escrima is a mostly-weapon art (at advanced level there are also some bare hand technique especially if your teacher can teach you pentiak-silat) It is a Philippino MA. The first weapon you learn is the stick the you go to double stick, knife, soft weapons like bandana etc. Basically the aim of the art is to teach you to use any object as a weapon. It is sometimes teached in conjunction with JKD because one of its master (Dan Inosanto) learned JKD directly from Bruce Lee, and then invented its Dan Inosanto Method which incorpotes JKD and Kali-escrima.
