Hey what's up guys.

I was wondering if anyone here who fights or competes in Martial Arts Tournaments, MMA, or Fights Pro/Am in Muay Thai/Kickboxing has Diabetes, or knows about someone who has? I was wondering how they are doing or did, and what kind of precautions they take to insure a good blood sugar level throughout the match.

Thanks!

I am around that constantly and I know of noone that admits to having diabetes that is a fighter.

I have a few students that have diabetes, and the most serious has a device that is attached directly to him at all times, it looks like a small walkman, he seems to do ok, and it hasnt seemed to be a distraction to him or his fellow students at all

the device doesnt make it serious- its just an insuline pump. people with type 1 diabetes need either injections daily (more than one) or a constant supply via a pump. its up to the patient how to deal with it- but niether makes it 'more serious' than the other.

i really cant think of any way to make sure that sugars are fine during a fight, especially a long one such as a boxing match that goes 10 rounds or something.

and not to go off topic, but you have students lucky? how does that work?

Hey guys thanks for the replies.

I actually have Type 1 Diabetes, had it for roughly 6 years, and I currently use Lantus like Vito mentioned, and a Humalog mix. I've been trying to search and see if there were any Diabetic fighters out there, but I've come up empty so far. I would really like to compete at some point, but the only thing holding me back is keeping a stable blood sugar level throughout the fight.

I know that the adrenalin would most likely kick it up a little bit. But from there it can go both ways, so it's a little risky.

Let me know if you guys got any suggestions. :)

Thanks!

well the constant exercise will drop it, but how much and how fast is due to all sorts of other things happening in your body. there are hormones and other activities youre not aware of that affect you all day... but theyre doing ilit (sp?) cell transplants these days, so cures are starting to become available.

Have a chat with your doctor - he/she will know your medical history and be able to advise you about being healthy enough to compete.

Vito, what do you mean how does that work?

I think i am not catching part of your question.... because as far as i know when someone has students it means they are teaching them something :P
