When I was in junior high and high school I used to skateboard and play a LOT of volleyball. Both of those activities really screwed up my left ankle. I gave up the skateboarding, and that sorta helped it. I wore big stiff ankle braces when I played volleyball, and I would still occasionally manage to twist it during games or practice. I quit playing about 4 or 5 years ago.

It would act up every now and then, mainly when I twisted my ankles easily by doing something simple like getting off of the bus, or stepping the wrong way on a crack in the road. When I started doing karate, it just got worse. I wear a little neoprene sleeve-style brace, since I don't wear shoes and I can't wear the stiff kind. I think I will be getting shoes and a stiffer brace soon, which doesn't completely excite me, since that means very limited mobility in my ankle.

The other day, I was wearing high heels on my way to work. I work retail, so I have to wear dress shoes and walk around for 5-8 hours at a time. So, I fell over and twisted my ankle really bad. I'm used to dealing with it, so I kept walking all day (in heels) despite it. Then, I still had to work for the next three days, so, even though I got flatter and more supportive shoes, it still hurt a lot. It hasn't gotten any better, even though I've been off of it for two days. But, I didn't really expect it to get better.

I've had to miss a few of my MA classes for it, and that really really upsets me. I was out for a week, and I had hoped to go back last night. It didn't feel any better, so I called up my dojo and told them I'd be out until probably next week. That's when I'm also going to the doctor.

I don't think she'll be able to tell me much without giving me an x-ray, but when it does happen, I'm really scared. I'm really worried they'll tell me something bad, something that will make it so I can't do karate or much of anything anymore.

This isn't any fun. :bawling:

Sorry to hear about your ankle, Beka.

I hope you manage to get it sorted out and that you can still do Cuong Nhu. :)

Beka, sorry to hear about it. You should see a doctor and ease a bit for a while. No use making more effort with a busted ankle. I've done it all the time (had a displaced shoulder from an accident and many injuries in the dojo and outside. My back is all busted and so on). It's not smart to avoid the doctor amd work while injured. Still we tend to overlook the problems just because the training is funny and addictive and we've got used to the pain.

I hope you'll get over it. Rest and be patient. The dojo would still be there :D

You twisted your ankle and then stood on it for a few days. I'm not surprised it hurt that long. Personally, I wouldn't be worried that much, but I'm far from a doctor.

Good luck with the recovery.

Hi, I'm kinda new here, but I wouldn't borrow trouble, wait and see. Also I think we've learn our lesson about high heels and twisted ankles.

I hope you recover and can get back to you MA !

You must be stable and balanced in your foot work, if you have to use your martial knowledge in combat, your intent should be to win. If you do strike, you must release great power! The martial arts are easy to learn, but difficult to correct.

Beka,

I am not a doctor but I would say that don´t torture yourself, wait and see what the doctor says.

It could just be a temporary condition. Be positive.

Real traditional martial arts training is difficult to find.....most dojos in the west are Mcdojos....some are better and some are worst....but they are what they are....do you train in one?

I wonder if there isn't there any sort of physical therapy you can do with your ankle?

People with knee problems have all sorts of execises they can do to strengthen the knee, especially after having surgery.

One would think that surely there's something like that for the ankle?

I'm sure high heels are very hard on the ankles, but wooohooo they sure look good. :D
