I am 28 years old and about a year ago was diagnosed with a slipped L4-L5 disc. I started TKD last year and and my back went out causing me to stop TKD for 3 months. In those 3 months I went through some extensive chiropractic work. I started back into practicing TKD slowly and eventually worked up to a good pace. My back was doing great all the way up to this past Thursday, (June 17th). I had a pretty good workout that day and after I was done my back even felt great. I always stretch 20 min before class and 10 - 15min afterward. However the next day about 1:00 in the afternoon my back started to go out on me. I tried stretching it out and I put ice and a warm bath but by 7:00 in the evening it was out. The pain normally last a couple days. I still go through chiropractic work however I need some more advice as to how to condition my body with such a problem . I do not want to quite TKD because I really love it. Please help. I am willing to try whatever I can. I have searched and searched the web for answers but have not found any. Again Please Help.

Sorry about your back problems. I myself have back troubles since a bad fall and have had many ups and downs with my TKD. When I did PT I did a lot of back extensions and worked on my abs as they need to be strong to support a weak back. It takes a while to get things strong, just be deligent everyday. There are things I cannot do like I did before but I have always managed to find a way to adapt and I would never consider quitting! Good hamstring flexability is also a must as they pull directly on the low back and if they are too tight you will have more pain.

Good Luck!

I can totally sympathise, I've lost that disc and slipped the one above it (I'm only 20! :o ) I don't train at the moment, I've just spent the last year in a wheelchair trying to get it sorted, but I too used to do TKD.

Sit ups and stuff are great for getting a six pack, but you really want to train your core abdominal muscles, and surrounding skeletal muscles, because these are the things that hold your spine straight Sit ups mainly effect the upper abdominal muscles, rather than the deeper layer (which u want to work on) If you strengthen them, then you lessen the chances off irritating your condition because you've got yourself into a bad position whilst training, as they support your back.

Learn how to use a gym ball (there's hundreds of excercises you can do), and try pilates, both of these are great for bad backs. Also because you're conditioning your skeletal muscles you should find that your TKD improves as your posture will get better, and your overall speed should improve. If you work out a certain movement is causing the problem, just don't do it. For me bending backwards is a big nono.

Hope you get better soon :)
