GrrrArg Posted June 16, 2004 Posted June 16, 2004 Technically, if 4th dan = 4, then I must be around 0.2 Following that logic im a 0.7 i think. Sounds about right *sigh* My sensei has favourite confusing saying, its slightly different everytime but the gist of it is: "You're as good as you are now because thats how good you are now, you can't be any better than you now, now. Because your not that good, yet. In a years time you'll be as good as you can be for your skill level at that time..." you get the idea.. So im a 10. Im as good as I possibly can be now given all the factors that have led me to where I am at this moment in time, ill be a 10 tmrw and the day after and the day after that too. We are all tens, just some are tens you are better at a certain MA for whatever reason. Confused?
aefibird Posted June 16, 2004 Author Posted June 16, 2004 Technically, if 4th dan = 4, then I must be around 0.2 Well that makes me a 1, then. Yep, thats about right! I'd probably rate my kata at around 2.5, but my kicks would score in the minus numbers and drag the average down considerably. hey, I'm with ya there in the 'kicking minus numbers' Angelica!! lol Overall, I'd give myself a 3. I know a teensy bit (enough to get to Shodan) but I also know that there's still mountains of stuff for me to learn and work on. "Was it really worth it? Only time and death may ever tell..." angelica d Posted June 16, 2004 Posted June 16, 2004 That reminds me of a quote I read somewhere - 'The more you study, the more you realise you don't know, and the more you'll be able to forget. So don't study!' I liked that a lot back in the days when it applied to schoolwork, but its different with MAs when you actually do want to learn. Its funny when I teach beginners though. Afterwards I ask them what they think, and they reply 'Its not that hard, I think I've nearly got it'. Hahahahaha if only they knew!! GrrrArg Posted June 16, 2004 Posted June 16, 2004 Depends on your viewpoint. Human nature is to have an inflated sense of ones worth/ability. How can you be sure if you are allowing correctly for that or being to humble, or even being egotistical and assuming your first guess was humble and so adding a point or two. Far better to get someone impartial but knowledgeable to judge for you. Gradings I think they are called
Zorba Posted June 17, 2004 Posted June 17, 2004 The question posted was how good a martial artist are you, not how good a fighter, or would you kick my * in the street. if the question was how good a fighter, then the numbers would be higher, cos technique and style are not as important. but as for martial arts, while it does have to do with fighting, its not its sole purpose. Ravencroft Posted June 17, 2004 Posted June 17, 2004 Yeah thats true but there are great martial artists who know all kinds of philosophy and have tons of experience with a 5th dan or whatever but if u put them up against a professional fighter with much less formal MA training they might get the crap kicked out of them. it all depends what u are training for. i personally dont consider myself that great of a martial artist and maintain that i am a much better fighter because that past few years thats what ive been training for and the material ive learned is geared more towards that purpose. it really all just depends on the person. "Humility is fine and dandy, but i believe it defeats the purpose of answering this thread if humility would go so far as to override honesty." Yeah i agree
Zorba Posted June 17, 2004 Posted June 17, 2004 still tho, the thread is about martial arts. not fighting It takes a big man to admit when he's wrong, and I am NOT a big man.Tae Kwon Do (ITF) - 1st Dan Black BeltShotokan Karate - 6th Kyu
White Warlock Posted June 17, 2004 Posted June 17, 2004 So are we to say that martial arts is not about fighting? The art of war, as we study it in the training halls, is primarily about melee. That is, it is about fighting. Fighting is not merely your ability to punch, but where, how, when, why, etc. There are various schools of martial arts that teach things 'other' than the martial arts. Many include religion, language studies, ancient or foriegn ettiquette, and other things that are truly 'not' about martial arts... but about the nations those particular styles originated from.
