It's natural to be intimidated or a little bit afraid of sparring. You could just let her know that the good schools would never put you in a position that you will be hurt easily. A lot of schools will take the time to ease the practitioner into sparring. Most schools make you wear all the safety gear to minimize the chances of being hurt. It's something a lot of people are afraid of but once they get into it they realize it's not as bad as they had imagined and a lot of people really start to enjoy it as Delta1 has said.

I think considering the arts you mentioned JKD can be a valid choice, but check if that school does the combo JKD/Kali-Escrima (Dan Inosanto's method) because I think this is one of the best integrated self defence method; it combines the unarmed techniques of JKD to the typical Kali-escrima capability of transforming almost everything you can think of into a weapon.

Concerning the sparring issue this depends on the school if done wisely it may be not too harmful.

I reccomend Shotokan Karate-but this may be becausethats all I reccomend :karate:

But, Shotokan Karate is a brilliant self defense art and you will meet lots of people and have fun in no time.

"To be elated at success, and dissappointed at defeat, is to be the child of Circumstances."

I wish I followed that rule! ^^ I hate Losing!

I am learning Goju-ryu Karate which is not competition-based like Shotokan. It is more self-defense and has higher stances and more circular movements.

I am very new to it but I love every minute of it. Even the days of aching after training :D
