What grade are you

Hi People,

 

I know there is that state your name and kyu thing, but for an easy summary i thought i would make it a poll. If you do more than one style, or have previously done different styles, please state your highest ranking.

Yow, I am not familair with the "kyu" belt system.. so tell we with I would be.. I just past my first grading and I am now a with belt Shaolin Kung Fu

Yeah, this is pretty weighted toward TKD.

 

If you want me to move it to the Korean forum, I will. Or, you could revise it to be more generic accross multiple art's grading systems.

Karate is a Kyu system. I thought the Kyu system is more reliable than the color belt system because the belt colors in every style is so different?

No necessarily, also the starting kyu level changes from school to school.

But now I still don't know with kyu level represents my white belt shaolin Kung Fu.

 

Maybe if someone can post the test requirements voor the kyu system I can form an idea.

My karate style starts students off a 10th kyu (white belt). To get your 9th kyu you have to be able to demonstrate basic plocks and kicks and punches, do some 3-step basic sparring and perform a kata (form) as well as answer simple questions about shotokan.

 

My aikido style starts students off at 7th kyu, although some schools start at 5th kyu and some have as many kyu grades as 10 or 12.

I pretty much figured that "kyu" was the universal martial arts word for grading. Like when you say "kata' everyone knows what you mean. I still think its pretty obvious. 10th being the lowest grade and black being the top grade. kinda like how black is at the top of the list and 10th is at the bottom. I didnt put belt colors cos different styles, hell even the same styles have different belt orders.

 

to work out which one applies to you use this formula. Take black belt as the highest grade (not including dans or degrees), then the belt prior to that is 1st kyu, then, the next one down is 2nd kyu. etc etc keep counting till you reach your belt.

k, then I think I'm 7th Kyu

 

cause my belt system is black, brown, blue, green, red, orange, yellow , white, nothing.

 

(not really sure about red doh)

 

And I'm a white belt. So that makes me 7th Kyu

if there are any stripes or things between belt then that counts as a kyu.

 

ie, in my karate, when you get purple, the next level is purple with a white stripe. this is counted as 2 kyu's
