solar_kid Posted June 3, 2004 Posted June 3, 2004 Hello all, I've been reading KarafeForums for a while now, and I've found it very helpful. Thanks! I finally decided to stop lurking and introduce myself. I just started practicing the Shotokan karate style in February, and am enjoying it a lot so far. By way of conversation, I wonder how much your karate instructors understand that they may have to repeat their instructions. I often find that when an instructor corrects my technique, try as I might, I often keep making the same mistake. I find myself hoping that they understand that it's not that I'm ignoring their correction, but that I just have a hard time getting my body to do the technique right. Anyway, thanks for the great forum! ----Hmm. Hello. This is the floor. How did I get here?
White Warlock Posted June 3, 2004 Posted June 3, 2004 Welcome. Of those i've instructed, repetition is the norm, not the exception. I can say, however, that my biggest challenge was a woman with a severe learning disability. Besides having to break things down to their bare essentials in order for her to gain insight, she would forget almost everything i taught her by the time she attended the next class. Oddly enough, i took pride in training her. Probably because, deep down, she really did want to learn. If your interest is sincere, your instructor will know and provide the necessary patience, assuming he's a decent instructor. ramymensa Posted June 3, 2004 Posted June 3, 2004 Been there too. After 3 months in Karate I put up a site with many information about the stuff. I was indeed very well informed and studied a lot about techniques and so on. Still my body was a slow learner. I knew what I had to do, I knew were I was making mistakes, still it was hard to to the things correctly. It comes with the time. Work hard and know your stuff theoretically and practical. It would be OK World Shotokan Karate

Some are like sponges who absorb everything after being showed once and some take a little longer. Take what you learn in class and work on it at home and anywhere else you get the opprotunity. italian_guy Posted June 3, 2004 Posted June 3, 2004 Welcome to KF. I think that good instructors should have patience and good memory to remember when they were beginners too.
TheDevilAside Posted June 3, 2004 Posted June 3, 2004 Welcome to KF At the beginning, I had problems adjusting too. The weirdest part was re-learning to fight with my right foot forward (primarily) instead of my left foot forward. Techniques were a pain, terribly awkward, but only at first. Don't worry, your instructor shouldn't become impatient with you, I doubt you're the only beginner he's ever trained Just be eager to learn and ambitious. CloudDragon Posted June 9, 2004 Posted June 9, 2004 Welcome! Don't worry about your difficulties with training. You will start to see patterns develop in the techniques and once you master the basic movements, variations and additions to them will be much easier.
