What do you carry self defense wise?

Recommended Posts

Does anyone carry any type of knife or self defense device such as pepper spray or a kubaton? I usually carry a folding knife and sometimes a ASP baton. We have a lot of dunderheads in Baltimore, so I never leave my home without some kind of protection.

What about you?

My own two fists and feet, along with a tenacious sense of self-preservation.

Oh, and a switchblade. But I would not pull it out in most situations, as it ups the ante a fair ways.

Myself, my shoes, my belt, the change in my pocket, the chair in the hallway, the dirt on the ground. When riding my bike, my bike itself and the chain i use to secure it.

In the car, in addition to a variety of items tossed about and the car itself, i also have a 'short' dime-store wakizashi. But, that's primarily for me to practice with in the fields when i'm in the need for thought.

Ah, nice one Warlock. I'm very found of the theory that everything can be a weapon. And in practice it's safer if you're home alone because anything conspicuous is likely to be picked up and used against you!

Personally, I don't carry anything, but then carrying weapons is a bit iffy in the eyes of the law so I generally don't think it's worth it.

Um, a bit off topic, but I'll be going to Thailand at the end of the year. I'll be training with friends but I intend to travel afterwards and will probably be on my own - I was wondering about safety precautions. What do people think? Can I carry weapons? Should I carry weapons? I don't know...

When traveling, the best safety precaution is knowledge and common sense. Don't be conspicuous. Don't flash your cash. Know where you are traveling from, to and through. Read the local news. Contact your nation's embassy, as they usually have an up-to-date report on things to watch out for.

Your ignorance provides the enemy the element of surprise and a weapon is useless if you don't get a chance to use it. If you do decide to carry any weapons, make sure they are both legal and regionally acceptable (it may be legal to carry a sword in the streets of Los Angeles, but clearly not acceptable).

Again, your nation's embassy can provide some of the best information on travel in a specific region/nation.

Oh, and a switchblade.

Hahaha... not that it's important, but......

Speaking of weapons, I have a butterfly knife, probably 4ish inches long, sharpened on one side only. The guy at the gun show where I bought it said it was legal to carry because it was only sharp on one side, but he was wearing a hat that said "The U.N. is not your friend" so I don't necessarily trust what he says. Anyone know if it's USA legal to carry? Certain states only maybe?

The only actual "weapon" I carry is a kobutan on my keychain. Bit I agree with White Warlock in that there are many things in your environment to use for weapons, plus the obvious weapons we're training to use on our bodies. The moist effective of which is that big one between your ears.
