the things you mention seem to translate into (and i am reading them in pinyin, into very bad mandarin, and translating back into english from CANTONESE...)

'horse stance training changing into attack stance centre punch' (then i can't think of what the 'shang bo' is...).

it sounds like (what i would call) a 'simple' movement.

y'know, position, step, hit, step kind training.

what we in the wing chun class call a 'one hit break'

i.e one hit then break and start again.

just so you know, i did these as well.

this was treated as basic training that we did before actually going into the forms training.

i.e they were to teach us how to move the shaolin way.

in a way, they were more like exercises rather than proper training.

well, it actually sounds about right, as you are still a relative beginner too, right?

maybe when you get further into the training, it'll be more recognisable to me (i didn't learn shaolin as an absolute beginner)

i really have to be there to see.

Ya I'm a beginner, euhm I started 6 or 7 months ago. So now I've seen basic training movements, like you said to learn how to move. And 1 big form, and 1 little one. I'm starting just now at my 2nd big form. Tsau hong Tsuan

just curious now.

in basic punching from bow and arrow with left leg in bow,

do you switch into horse stance (see ping ma) when you punch with your left hand then back to bow and arrow for punch with right hand?

or do you remain in bow and arrow for both punches?

or have i totally lost you....?

I'll do my best to explain. First we do normal punches, standing straight, right arm is forward, then punch left then punch right again. That is the first punching exercise.

The following exercise is the same as above but we are in horse stance.

Next we go into mabu (horse stance), our left arm is in the air, then we punch to the left side with the right arm and we go out of horse stance into left leg in bow and right leg straight.

Then the same exercise but now on the right side

These are the basic punching exercises. If my explanation is to bad just let me know and I'll try again :)

I think that's what he meant, draven :-)

We use that as a warm up exercise about 30 - 50? (we don't count them)in horse stance, 30 to the left and 30 to the right.

Before that exercise we do another variant, we take a rock (ranging from 6ponds - 10) holding it with both hands against the chest and then move it forward until arms are stretched in front of you, then back to the chest again. This 50 times in horse stance (we damn well count these :P ) 50 with left leg in bow and 50 right leg in bow.

After these two exercise i'm all out of breath but that's a beginner speaking of course :D

i was forced to do horse stance for half hour with weights....

then afterwards we used to work on moving in low stances.

it was 'special torture'.

anyway, if you're out of breath then i would say you are 'forcing' your breathing.

not sure if you should.

try relaxing your breathing

and try to breath from your lower abdomen region...

(haven't i said this before somewhere?)

um, yeah....

they guy who taught me was a very old fashioned kinda guy.

his idea was not to build up what i could do slowly

but

to set a high target straight away and keep moving that target further and further away.

also, the longer you sit in a horse stance, the more your body (or you) will find a way where it is comfortable.

the thing is, a lot of people (beginners) actually don't realise that their horse is wrong;

they hurt after two minutes cos they are relying on muscle to 'sit' and not 'sitting' on structure.

this is something that you have to find yourself and the longer you are in the stance, the quicker you will find your 'correct' position/structure.

same with the weights.

after a while you will naturally rely on elbow position and structure to take most of the weight.

again, something that you can only feel to know what is correct.
