Draven Chen Zhen
Welcome to Karateforums, I study also Kung Fu, but then the Shaolin style.. so I don't know a lot of Northern Mantis. So I would appreciate if you could tell me a little more about your style. blackmantis
Northern Mantis is a Shaolin based martial art that uses high kicks, agile footwork and grabbing techniques using a hand-form known as the mantis claw. Tell me more about your style! S
Draven Chen Zhen
We also use high kicks, locks, enzo... We also see a lot of animal forms... We also learn to use weapons, like bo, sword, spear, dual sword, chain, 3section staff... A basic form we train on is the long arm boxing, or Shaolin Tombei boxing. And not to forget we also learn the Iron Hand technique. How does the manits claw looks like? Got a picture of it somewhere? And in the grabbing techniques do you also so move to prevent a tack-down? :: Bless me father, for I have just killed quite a few men ::https://www.tricking.be
blackmantis
The Mantis Claw is hard to explain- it has the index and middle fingers pointing forwards and the thumb, ring-finger and little-finger do the grabbing. When we grab an opponent's arm, we can follow it with a sinking movement into a low stance- this can cause considerably shock to the opponent (and can even cause a kind of whip-lash effect). I'm very interested in your Shaolin Style as it seems to be closely related to my own- Which kicks do you have in it? Which animal forms do you have?- praying mantis uses a tiger palm for some techniques- maybe this is borrowed from a Shaolin Tiger Form? S
Drunken Monkey
the easiest way for me to know exactly what style you are doing is to ask what lineage of mantis are you from. post count is directly related to how much free time you have, not how intelligent you are."When you have to kill a man it costs nothing to be polite." Ironberg
Interesting - it almost sounds like Northern Mantis is like Hapkido, except with intricate footwork and unusual hands. Drunken Monkey
gonna add my worthless lot. mantis in general has very heavy emphasis on body/arm/positional structure. part of the mantis claw is that is lines up the joint along your arm and focuses strength/energy/power into your elbow in order to produce a very strong receiving position. that's why you then use the body as guiding force, in order to not compromise elbow power. in other (and very simple) words, you receive with your hands and control with the body and move with your feet. often these things overlap (as in turning hip to add power, step in to increase effect) but the basic principle is there. ugh, i think i've confused the matter by over explaining.... hope you understand. post count is directly related to how much free time you have, not how intelligent you are."When you have to kill a man it costs nothing to be polite." Draven Chen Zhen
Which kicks do you have in it? Which animal forms do you have?- praying mantis uses a tiger palm for some techniques- maybe this is borrowed from a Shaolin Tiger Form? SI'm just a beginner to (6 months) so I don't know all the moves, espacially in english. But we have butterfly kicks, roundhouse (from out -> in and from in -> out, so both ways) , roundhouse 360° , then a cool running 180° roundhouse (for if you are beeing chased). Then the usual sidekicks. We also got a kick where you do a side kick but you do not hit the face you let it pass and when i've passed the face with your leg you pull it back, so you can hit him in de neck, behind the head. Not an easy move to perform but a nice one when done correctly. We also got some legsweeps and stuff. These are the basics. And animal forms let's just say for you first belt you need to know 32 animal forms, and that's just serie 1 one of the is Tiger (the first one) then snake, panther, mantis, eagle, hawk.... So in Mantis Kung Fu, do you have weapon training? :: Bless me father, for I have just killed quite a few men ::https://www.tricking.be
Drunken Monkey
um, i have to say, your school sounds a bit um, 'messy' draven.... not sure what i think of a 'shaolin' school with belts. wonder what shi yan zhi would think? post count is directly related to how much free time you have, not how intelligent you are."When you have to kill a man it costs nothing to be polite."
