WhiteBelt
The best way to imrpove punching is by punching. But if you really want to work on the punching strength don't worry so much about your chest, it has more to do with your abs than you think. Full Contact Twist Bench Press Incline Neutral Grip DB Bench Press Edit: don't forget that if are going to hit the weights you need to work everything, not just your 'punching' muscles. Even your legs are involved here.
Rich67
That's very true. The abs are where you get the twisting motion from, hence the power behind the punch. When you strike, a lot more muscles are involved than just the chest and arms. Legs are involved, back, abs, you name it. You have to do heavy bag work to increase your punching strength. Also do ab work, aerobic conditioning, and stretch. A good program will eventually increase the power behind your punches. WolverineGuy
Actually, the twisting motion would be specifically your obliques. The abs serve one purpose: to bring your upper body down/lower body up...to sum that up, to make your upper and lower body meet. Abs have more to do with kicking than punching. So if you're gonna work your midsection for your punches specifically, do twisting crunches, bicycles, side situps, etc. At any rate, you need a strong core for ANY martial art, so it behooves of you to work the whole trunk simply for that reason Wolverine1st Dan - Kalkinodo"Shut up brain, or I'll stab you with a q-tip""There is no spoon." Thuggish
first of all, you do need to practice punching to get good at punching, so get a heavy bag. second, if you want power behind it, do weights. chest specifically, some sort of bench, with a barbell or dumbells really depends on you, cables can also build your chest huge... what you respond to etc. really depends on your body so youll have to find out yourself. do, however, use weights, pushups arent going to build muscle like weights will. but dont neglect the rest of the body, from legs to back to abs- it all matters, so you should do a full body routine. a broken arm throws no punches
cymry
Best overall exercise in my opinion is the Hindu pushup. Hits most of the muscles in your upper body and quite a few in your legs, depending on the angle of your body. Great for strength, but also for coordination, endurance and flexibility. SevenStar
To answer the first question - it depends on what result you are trying to get from the exercise. As far as punching strength, hit a bag. some trainers reccomend pushups to improve punching speed.
Thuggish
let me put it this way- boxers, and maybe kickboxers are the hardest hitters in the world. no one punches harder than them. they get that way by lifting weights and hitting a heavy bag. a broken arm throws no punches
