I used to skateboard too. I've slowed down a lot since I've joined Kyokushin just because I love class so much and I'd hate to miss class cause my ankle is mucked up. I agree though, skateboarding hurts... :)

I used to skateboard too. Now I have to wear an ankle brace in karate class!!! Anyone see a pattern!?!?! :P

I played baseball for 5 years before starting martial arts and wrestled in junior high, I think that the combination of these really helped out a lot, from baseball I had developed great eye/hand coordination and of course from wrestling I was already used to competition and knew how to read someone elses body movements and gained excellent balance, plus a lot of the moves were almost second nature due to muscle memory of being in similar positions before.

Hey, good thread!

 

I did alot of swimming, ballet and jazz dancing some years before starting karate. Although immediately before starting karate I was doing no exercise (recovering from a long illness) I think that the dancing had already taught me how to copy movements and learn sequences. Now I'm planning on starting horseriding lessons. I used to work at a stable and it was fun, so hopefully I'll enjoy riding too.

 

Aefibird, you say you climbed Kilamanjaro? That's awesome! I'm hoping to climb Mount Kenya next year, if I can raise enough money for the trip!

Yeah, climbing Kili was great! I hope you enjoy Mt Kenya - I'd like to climb that, but I haven't got enough money, and probably will need to save up for the next 30 years to be able to afford to go. :(

 

Just watch out for what anti-Malaria tablets you take - I had the sort where you take 2 types of tablet (one every day and one other once a week). They made me really ill for most of the trip - and standing on the top of the highest mountain in Africa and thinking about being sick all the time is not good fun. :-/

 

Angelica, you gotta start horseriding if you can - it's soooooo cool. I'd recommend it to anyone. Make sure you do plenty of stretching before your first session, or you'll be walking round in Kibadachi stance for danys to come!!

Ahh, just reminded of something my instructor once said. I was talking about how I think dancers would just pick up MA so quickly and he said "What's the difference between a dancer and a fighter?" Which I thought was really interesting. :)

I have been involved in sports, most of my life.

 

I played soccer for three years in 7th-9th grade, football and badminton in highschool. I also practiced judo on and off during that time. I started weighttraining in 9th grade and have continued on and off untill now.

 

In college, I boxed for a couple years, and started playing rugby. I retired from rugby after about 10 years and took up martial arts again.

 

I feel playing sports has helped me by developing physical power and agility as well as mental toughness and discipline.

I did Seven Years of Dance and some skateboarding. Out of dance, i got flexability, which is where my high kicks and splits come from, and good posture and attention to form. well, good posture in dance. I slouch terribly now.

 

Out of skateboarding... the ability to take a hit? =)

Not exactly sport but I did 2 and a half years of weightlifting and aerobics (usual gym courses) before starting MA in March last year.

Out of my skateboarding 'career' I learned the ability to land safely on the floor (due to falling off a lot practcing tricks)... a skill usefull in my later attempts at Aikido, where you attempt to blend with your opponents energy and your opponent attempts to blend you with the floor.

 

I'd say skateboarding is also good for improving balance. I'd say that, but I'm not actually sure seen as it never seemed to improve my balance one jot! lol
