Quest33 Posted May 17, 2004 Posted May 17, 2004 This is what Martial Arts means and does for me; 1. Discipline 2. Physical Fitness and well being 3. Self Confidence 4. Defense of Family, Friends, Country and Self 5. Mentorship (giving and recieving)
Jiyn Posted May 19, 2004 Posted May 19, 2004 Im a dedicated martial artist of all arts.I have been to tons of different styles throughout my life and their has only been brief periods in my life where i havent been doing any martial arts at all, unless you can count smacking my brother and punchbag.lol Ive just always been into fighting, not in a bad way, but ina kind of spiritual way if you know what i mean. Karate is like an explosion, not like paint drying!
gimgamgommetje Posted May 19, 2004 Posted May 19, 2004 Martial arts to me is basically learning how to fight. I practise boxing because I like the club and the people there and I enjoy the full contact sparring. Krav maga for the self defense aspect only. I'm doing an instructor course in this ,because I like teaching. It's simply something I enjoy. I practise jiu jitsu because I use the armbars etc in my work and in jiu jitsu class I can keep up to some of those techniques. I drop the techniques that I won't use in a real situation,, witch is quite a lot in jiu jitsu . I think it's quite weird to count in japanese and stuff,, i mean,, why speak dutch as usual but count in japanese? I guess I'm not traditional in that way. Ofcourse I respect all dojo etiquettes and if it makes people happy i'll count with them in japanese. So when it comes to fighting and learning martial arts , I think it's reality all the way. when it comes to respect, discipline etc etc etc. these are important aspects of my life philosophy, but those are regardless of my perception of martial arts. ofcourse they apply in the dojo/gym, but not more than in any other aspect of life. so vis pacem para bellum
Treebranch Posted May 20, 2004 Posted May 20, 2004 Martial Arts is learning to fight so you don't have to fight. "It is easier to find men who will volunteer to die, than to find those who are willing to endure pain with patience.""Lock em out or Knock em out"
Fenris-wolf Posted May 20, 2004 Posted May 20, 2004 Ahhh. Thank you Treebranch, very succient and accurate! I wish I'd said that... Let Us Turn The Jump Rope In Accord With Socialist Principles!
Reklats Posted May 20, 2004 Posted May 20, 2004 Much "define martial arts" talk is just a bunch of "my training scheme is the best" snobbery. I do martial arts to learn to fight, and stay in fighting shape. If other people want to spend their time learning forms and how to speak a different language, that's fine, but don't suggest that your method is in any way more of "martial arts" training.
JEM618 Posted May 20, 2004 Posted May 20, 2004 Martial Arts means unarmed combat so in reality anyone who fights without weapons is a Martial Artist. Martial arts are fighting skills or arts for both armed and unarmed combat. EX: Kendo and Arnis are both martial arts. Karate is a generic term used for unarmed combat. (karate - empty hand)
italian_guy Posted May 20, 2004 Posted May 20, 2004 For me Art (any art) is related to self-expression. For example a painter can paint an existing landscape and the resulting picture can be a faithful reproduction of it or not, but when you see the painting you should feel the personality of the person who made it. IMO Martial artist is somebody who search self-expression throu combat movements in actual fight or in forms. This implies some mastery of technique (you cannot be a good painter if you don't know how to hold a paint-brush in your hand) with the related hard work that's needed for this purpose. In my opinion is not strictly necessary to know several MA even if this broadens your field of view. When you have found your way (I do not say style which may be misleading here) to express yourself during fight or during form rapprentation than you can say you are a martial artist. My two eurocents....

Well, just goes to show, the euro DOES have some value! Hope you don't mind the editing- but you make a good point. Freedom isn't free!
