Hi, i have been wondering what the difference of the Gojuru style and the shotokan style of karate is. They seem to be very similar, but the similarities i am not sure of. Does anyone know what they are?

Kata sequences, Shotokan is less contact than Goju Ryu, which Is more full contact. Just your tastes I guess.

Shotokan and Goju are worlds apart. Admittedly there are some similarities but the philosophies are quite different. Shotokan tends to be very linear and reliant on strength. Goju tends to be circular and utilizes elements of softness. Goju kumite is very close Shotokan tends to be at a distance.

Obviously these are just generalizations but the list is endless.

Shotokan and Goju Ryu are way different styles . there are no similarities between them . shotokan is more linear and block they emphasis on power . they hit strong u block strong. Goju ryu emphasises more on circular offensive and defensive techniiques .and Goju Ryu karate uses your oppoenents force againt him . instead of using your own force to hurt someone. Goju Ryu to Me is much more effective but its a matter of what u like best

True that Goju-Ryu and Shotokan are different styles. But I must say that Goju-Ryu is a balanced art, we train in both hard linear techniques and softer circular techniques. We have elements of both the go and the ju in all techniques it is like the yin and the yang.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think that Go-ju ryu is the karate style that resembles more the chinese styles ( Circular movements, enphasis on breathing exercse etc.)

You're not wrong.

Shotokan=very linear

Goju=circular.

BUT I have heard some terrible things about the GOJU katas, especially Sanchin causing serious health issues in later life, inlcuding obeasity etc.

Not sure if there is any truth to it, but the one about the hemeroids seems plausable.

Goju ryu is an incredibly complete art, which, if properly trained will facilitate health, NOT the other way around. Its roots are in white crane, pakua, chi gong ......Ive said this countless times......

Shotokan Karate has its roots mainly in Shorin- Ryu; which, is considered by some pratitioners to be the sister style (aka Rivals) of Goju- Ryu. The founder of Shotokan, Gichin Funakoshi, was a traditional Okinawan Shorin- Ryu Stylist. As well as a few other disciplines.

I think that your best bet is to research the history and origins of Shotokan to better understand its present state in comparicon to Goju- Ryu. :D
