Red Triangle student
In my first competition in the Northern Regions in Barnsley in England i was facing a black belt in kumite. I was only a brown belt at the time and i kicked him and clearly got the point. I followed in with a punch they say that my fist was "Bent" when i hit him, does anyone have any suggestions what i should do to strengthen my wrists for punching? Ironberg
Truckloads of fist-pushups. Strike the heavy-bag bareknuckle. Lift weights properly. Buy grippers (if you want to punch someone so hard they have to change their underpants - work on your grip!!!). Shorinryu Sensei
Truckloads of fist-pushups. Strike the heavy-bag bareknuckle. Lift weights properly. Buy grippers (if you want to punch someone so hard they have to change their underpants - work on your grip!!!). Agreed! You sound bitter about the call, but as a judge at tournaments for the past 20+ years or so, I'd make the same call if I saw that. And most judges that have been doing this for a long time will see that sort of technique, and make the call accordingly. aefibird
Red Triangle Student, does that competition in Barnsley still run? Can you let me have some info about it please? Thanks! As for strengthening punches - lots of heavy bag work and weights work! "Was it really worth it? Only time and death may ever tell..." The Beautiful South - The Rose of My CologneSheffield Steelers! searcher
There are a great number of ways to strengthen your wrists for punching and all of the ones already mentioned are great. I would also say that lifting weights is great, ie. wrist curls, hammer curls, and reverse curls. There is one way to work the wrists that many would say in kind of funny, but is very good and that is milking cows. I know some milkers that have superb wrist strength. I am not joking around, if you have access to a farm give it a try. "let those who shed blood with me be forever known as my brother."
embm
Use hand wraps as a support for your wrist. Team RespectI may have taught you everything you know, but I haven't taught you everything I know. Dijita
Hand wraps in a lot of tournements are not allowed. Using hand wraps during training, in my opinion, will actually weaken your wrists. Your wrists will become dependent on them, and you will not learn how to punch properally without them. As stated, do lot's of knuckle pushups. It's important that you are doing them ONLY on your first two knuckles (beside your thumb), as these are the knuckles that are supposed to strike in a punch. Go through your basic strikes again, but go through them a bit more slowly making sure that you are punching correctly.
