If you have a problem with excessive pronation or supination (rolling of ankle over the foot, a simple way to put it, in either direction) then ankle supports can help you avoid injury. But most of the over-the counter supports are worthless. If you are working out hard, you need a stiffer support. I don't use them, since I have no need for them. I have only received a sprained ankle a couple times in my life. I could see using a support if you have a prior ankle injury, or constantly sprain it during exercise. Otherwise, forget it.

You'll notice Thai/Kick boxers wear them all the time and Boxers wear high ankle boots.

This is because when you get a good crack on the chin and your knees go its very easy to sprain an ankle trying to keep upright.

I went over on my ankle really badly 18months ago. I'm still aware of it so wear ankle supports if i'm not properly warmed up.

I wear Neoprene ankle "pull on" wraps to keep the joints warm and in turn, less likely to injure. Both my ankle are weaker due to previous injuries and I find these help prevent future ones.

Make sure you rotate the ankle joints before class as well.

Mine is a lace-up type that has velcro belts that go around the ankle for stability. Works great.

It's happy hour somewhere in the world.
