Hi,

Having managed to fall badly and damage the ligaments in my shoulder, (definitely nothing broken and no muscle damage according to hospital) I was wondering if anyone has done anything similar and how it went with regard to regaining mobility and how long it took to heal!?!

I can lift my arm to throat height forwards and sidewards but still hurts to lift any weight (and I cant manage to drive - changing gear is a killer!). Its been 11 days since I did it and I still have a big lump on my collar bone (where I assume the ligament is damaged).

I am off to the doctors later on today to see what he reckons but was wondering if anyone else has had similar experiences.

Thanks,

A rather unhappy Andy :(

It sounds like an AC (Acromio-Clavicular) joint seperation. This is a small joint that connects the lateral side of the collar bone to the top of the shoulder.

I injured this joint several times while playing rugby, and the recovery time was dependent on the severity of the seperation. The second-degree seperation I had required my arm to be in a sling for 7-10 days, and it took an additional four weeks to get back to 85-90% strength. The first-degree seperations healed much more quickly and completely.

Be careful and take your time rehabbing it. This seems to be one of those injuries that will recure much easier after it has happened once.

You are doing the best thing by going to see the doctor. Good luck in your recovery!

Hi - Thanks for the reply.

It seems, however, that my local hospital doctors are rather thick and got my diagnosis wrong! :kaioken:

My GP sent me back for another X-Ray as he was convinced that it was a broken collar bone and couldnt possibly be the ligament problems diagnosed by the hospital... sure enough he was right - broken (greenstick not snapped)! :o

At least it should heal better than ligament damage :D

Apparently some breaks dont show up too well when immediately X-Rayed

Strangly enough, finding out it is broken is good news, and like you wrote the bones should heal better than the ligaments would.

Good luck with the recovery!

Get well soon Andy!

I've been told that a broken collar bone is one of the quickest healing bones in the body - not that it's much of a comfort if you actually have a broken collar bone...

Hope it heals up soon. Take it easy and get plenty of rest!

Cheers guys :)

Yeah it does heal quickly and I can still use it a bit because it hasnt snapped fully so not all bad - just tricky putting socks on and tieing my shoe laces!

It is a major pain in the a*se, but it has helped my teaching ability - when I am trying to explain something I have to get a student to demonstrate the technique for me! If I carry on teaching til I am 80 odd then this will prove valuable - cos I wont be able to do anything at all then :brow:

Good job I live within walking distance of my dojo cos I cant drive like this!

Andy.
