Rich67
I sometimes work out when I know I shouldn't, and last week was one such event. I felt ill, but yet I still trained hard and pushed myself through a workout. The next day, I came down with a nasty sinus infection, and have been out of the loop for 4 days now. What's a rule of thumb for working out when sick? Can you work out when you have a common cold? How about a stomach virus (mild, of course)? Or if you feel a little ill, just forget it and take the day off? I hate missing workouts, but when I train when I'm a little weak, I miss a heck of a lot more when I get sicker! How do you guys deal with this? Mixed Martial Artist
Beka
get yourself some Zicam and you'll never have to train sick again. It's a homeopathic remedy you can find at the drugstore. It's zinc based, and comes in an oral spray, chewable tablets, or melt-in-your-mouth kind. They all taste pretty bad, and you have to take them every 3 hours, BUT, you won't get sick, and if you do, your sick time will be drastically shortened. I swear by the stuff. equaninimus
If you train with the stomach flu, the management courteously requests you to leave the training floor prior to vomiting. TheDevilAside
I would say to just rest, you're not sick that often, are you? I only get sick maybe 2-4 times a year.. and that's maybe and accumalative of a month of not working out in a year? And that at most. krunchyfrogg
If I'm sick, and I really want to train, I let the Sensei know I'm not 100% before class, and I bow out if things get too intense. I just won't push as hard as I usually would if I'm not feeling well. ramymensa
In an ideal situation whenever sick I shouldn't train. I know I won't be able to work 100 % and it would be deemed as a waste of time. Still I go because I want to be there and to learn more. You can learn by seeing others too, and I always discuss with sensei. When I don't perform too good it's because I'm not feeling OK and he gets to know it first. Maybe it's not a great idea but I still push myself. The only time I skipped class because of sickness was in january this year. I had a very nasty flu and it just wouldn't go. So I thought I should really stay home and take care so it wouldn't turn into something more dangerous. World Shotokan Karate
WolverineGuy
If I'm sick, I stick to resting. It's harder to get well if your'e training, especially since I refuse to go below 100%. Sorynn
If I am sick, I generally skip class and take in plenty of rest and fluids. 1. It prevents me from getting really ill. 2. I do not want to transmit a bug to my classmates. Last fall, one of my training partners came to class with a nasty cough and 2 mornings later I felt terrible and could not get out of bed. SaiFightsMS
Much better to stay away from class if you have something that might be contagious.
