EvilTed Posted March 23, 2004 Posted March 23, 2004 So my fractured foot is healing fine but now my right knee is starting to go out bad I get a burning pain on the inside of the knee, roughly 1" diameter. It's been getting worse over the last 6 months but now I can't drive easily for the pain and need to wear a brace to be able to walk on it or train. Should I quit training for a while or take supplements and suck up the pain? If there are good suplements for knees what are they? I've heard gluocosamine is good but maybe it's a bit late for all that and I need to go under the knife? Thanx ET
ramymensa Posted March 23, 2004 Posted March 23, 2004 Maybe you could take it easy with the effort. I've busted my knees at ski and after 2 days they stopped hurting. But the pain was back the moment I started training in the dojo. I know it's not such a big deal and I can deal with it. In your case it sounds serious. Try to rest your legs and see what a proffesional (doctor) has got to say. Having already a fractured leg is not the happiest thing in the world. Rest a bit so you won't have complications. trekmann Posted March 23, 2004 Posted March 23, 2004 As you probably know Karate training is high impact on the knees. I agree with ramymensa that you should seek some medical advice. Rest, Physio and Anti-Inflammatory meds might do the trick. The strongest principle in human growth lies in human choice (Alexander Chase).
gheinisch Posted March 23, 2004 Posted March 23, 2004 I agree with the others, give it some rest and seek medical advice. It may not be anything serious but you never know. Have it checked out. I'm going to move this to the health and fitness section. Probably will get more advice there. Pain is your body's way of telling you that something is wrong. The MCL can be rehabed without surgery but it takes time. I got a 2nd degree tear on one of mine couple of years ago and it took 6 months og 3-times a week therapy to get it fixed. I still wear a brace while training.
The Saint Posted March 24, 2004 Posted March 24, 2004 I use glucosimine and it works well, however, You should probably seek some help from a doctor that specilizes in knee problems, surgury on the knees has improved in the past 10 years. EvilTed Posted April 2, 2004 Author Posted April 2, 2004 Well I saw a Doc and he thinks it's tendenitis or worse, an MCL injury. I've been on Naproxen 500mg for a week or so but it doesn't help much. I had unforgiveable pain driving home tonight It hurts driving more than anything since it is my right leg and constantly under tension. Never seems to hurt doing karate? Anyway, the doctor said to take the pills for 10 to 15 days and if it doesn't get better go see an orthopedic surgeon. I was told that it's better to have surgery since it heals better. This sounds like crap to me. Surely surgery is the last option? ET
ramymensa Posted April 2, 2004 Posted April 2, 2004 Maybe it could be better. I know someone who did surgery and now is feeling way better. It's unpleasant and you are out of MA for a while, some months or so, but then you can get back and recover. If you don't deal with your problem it won't heal and you'll be out forever (God forbid). So just do what the doctors advice. Maybe get a second opinion and be prepared for anything. It can't get worse than now. Good luck and tell us about your progress. World Shotokan Karate
CanuckMA Posted April 3, 2004 Posted April 3, 2004 I had a second degree tear to my right MCL. Fixed it with TENS treatements and a chiropractor. Took 6 months though. Surgery may be better. Seek a second opinion.
