Torn ACL

Starting a new thread just about ACL injuries as unfortunately I have torn mine ( have had a chronic ACL injury but this time I really did it good! ). I am so bummed!!!! I will be unable to train adequately for testing in May so I am going to try to have surgery soon in order to be ready for November. Any one here have an ACL experience? I am specifically interested in results of surgery, rehab time, effect on training now, was it worth it, etc.

Hi NN,

Sorry to hear about your injury. I tore my ACL back when I was 18 yrs old. It was befrore most medical insurance companies reconized arthroscopic(sp?) surgery. I had to choose open surgery or try to rehab it. I had a few friends that had the operation and were still not anywhere near what they were or worse after surgery. I slowly rehabed it over the course of a year and a half. It was a long and very painful experience. It took me months before I could do a single leg lift and about 6-8 months where I could lightly jog on it. After a year I was able to run and longer before I could make a side to side movement without my knee buckling under me. The good news is that today Im able to do things my doctors never thought possible. I started MA at age 30 and Im running around jumping and kicking with poeple half my age (and I can keep up and even run them into the ground :D )

As for the arthoscopic I know a few people that have had it and they are doing great. One friend had it done 5yrs ago and just had another one done :o .........ON THE OTHER KNEE!!! He likes to ski

Dont fret, they have gotten pretty good with that type of surgery these days. You'll be back to normal soon. If I had to do it all over again I would definately have the scope. A year and a half of pain is just too much.

Good luck and keep us posted, dont be a stranger...... :)

Pain is only temporary, the memory of that pain lasts a lifetime.

I don't know is "normal" is the right word... , but thanks for the encouragement. So far I can still kick and run (and snowboard :brow: !) but not without some pain and that uncertainty about when it will give out. My hamstrings are killing me from trying to keep it all together as I do stupid things!!!! Oh well, as I always say...pain is relative to how much fun your having!

I tore my ACL, MCL and meniscus in November. I was flat on my back 2 days post-op (outpatient) and finally was up and moving around on day 3 with minimal pain. I did the hamstring graft, but I heard the allograft (cadaver ACL) is quicker for recovery time. I am feeling pretty good now, although I still have a weird pop in my knee and it still bothers me. I started doing sqauts last week ( taking it easy- 90 pounds) and it's just a matter of strengthening the muscles again. Look at about 2 months of physical therapy after, and look at being about 70% in about 4 months. You won't be 100 percent until 9 months post op. And that's if you keep up the exercise and stay active.

I have a 3" scar and 3 scars (holes) where they 'scoped it. I also had some nerve damage... my shin is numb from my kneecap to mid-shin... it feels like it's asleep if I touch it. Don't notice it unless I bang it. Feels weird. Hopefully it'll come back. Good luck. ACL surgery is supposedly the toughest rehab of any of the scope surgeries. It ain't fun, but if you want to do the things you love, it's the only option.

ACL - Anterior Cruciate Ligament

MCL - Mediant(?) Cruciate Ligament

They're major ligaments in the knee.

I'm really lucky to have never had any problems with my knees. My knee joints are lose from doing dangerous stretching exercises when i was younger (thanks to a bad instructor!!!) but i just go steady on them now.

I sympathise with you guys with injured knees, you miss 'em when they're gone!

Rich! Thanks for the reply. Glad to hear you are doing well with it. I have a question about the hamstring graft. What did it do to the flexibility of the hamstrings as a whole? Did you lose any flexiblity? Could you be prone to tears? My surgeon usually does patellar tendon grafts but I have heard that that this can be harder to rehab from....more patella problems etc. How many days did you have to take off work after you were up and around? Sorry for so many questions!!!!!
