The Saint Posted March 5, 2004 Posted March 5, 2004 I would like to know people view on the foam dipped gloves compare to a light pair of boxing gloves. Personally I use a light pair of boxing gloves that look more durable than the foam dipped gloves, Anyone agree/ dis agree? "Pain is the best instructor, but no one wants to go to his class." monkeygirl Posted March 5, 2004 Posted March 5, 2004 The thing I like about foam-dipped gloves (at least the kind that I use), is that my fingers are free, and I could open my hand to grab my partner, or throw a ridgehand/knifehand, whatever. Weighted boxing gloves are good for muscle endurance and building speed. I wouldn't personally use boxing gloves in a sparring match, probably even if they weren't weighted, because of the enclosed hands. 1st dan & Asst. delta1 Posted March 5, 2004 Posted March 5, 2004 I voted All The Above (or I would have if there was such a category). Depends on what I'm doing. I don't really like the foam dipped gloves much. I prefer a glove that lets you grab, shape different hand strikes, do finger techniques, and generally gives a more natural use of the hand. While you can do those things to an extent with foam diped gloves, they are still a little more restrictive than the Kenpo style glove. Even the Harbinger bag glove is less restrictive and more versatile, and protects well enough for light to moderate contact. But everything has its use. Freedom isn't free!
AndrewGreen Posted March 6, 2004 Posted March 6, 2004 Handwraps w/ Boxing Gloves Grappling Gloves Foam dipped gloves are only good for ripping.... They don't breath, are terribly uncomfortable, rip easliy, slid around and really don't protect you all that much. Andrew Greenhttp://innovativema.ca - All the top martial arts news!

granmasterchen Posted March 6, 2004 Posted March 6, 2004 i like to go bare knuckle when training.... That which does not destroy me will only make me stronger
Shorinryu Sensei Posted March 6, 2004 Posted March 6, 2004 I have several foam dipped gloves kicking around somewhere in a box, but we don't really use them for sparring. We prefer no gloves at all, and good control istead on impact. Hand blows are light to the head, body shots are medium contact. You learn to block, or get used to being hit. it works for us! lol My nightly prayer..."Please, just let me win that PowerBall Jackpot just once. I'll prove to you that it won't change me!"
italian_guy Posted March 9, 2004 Posted March 9, 2004 For kickboxing I use hand wrap and boxing gloves, for tai chi chuan bare knuckles ( but we do not free spar until pre-black belt level 1st chi)
Rich_2k3 Posted March 27, 2004 Posted March 27, 2004 I use knuckle mits which are not listed, not all karate mits are foam dipped, infact many are not. "When my enemy contracts I expand and when he expands I contract" - Bruce Lee
