Hidy Ho everyone, i'm new here, and I will probably have a lot of questions over the next few weeks.

I am 17, and I have recently gotten into martial arts. I am beggining to look for a good school now....

I usta be over weight, about 167 lbs for 5'7". I went on a diet, and started to run. I lost about 30 lbs and I am down to 135.

I'm still not very happy though, I still have flab, and my muscles aint hard at all, even though they are pretty good sized.

So, I signed up at Golds Gym about 4 weeks ago. Since i was starting to get serious about martial arts, I figured it was time to get on the ball and start training hard.

So I went to the gym about 5 days a week, did about 15 minutes -1 hour of cardio after I worked out a specific body part each day.

I was doing pretty heavy weight, over about 3 sets of 12-15 reps.

Well, about 6 days ago, my joints in my legs, and my arms were hurting like crap...I mean like, I couldn't really lift anymore.

It scared the crap outta me, I didn't wan't permanent damage, so I stopped completly. My joints feel kind of better now, I have been eating lots of jello, and I am going to start taking glucose.

Butt if I start back, I just think it is going to come back.

WTF do I do???

Also, I can't get a real routine down no matter how hard I look on the internet.

I was something that hardens my muslces, and improves speed and strength.

I heard about plyometrics, butt I'm not sure how to fit that in with lifting weights, and I don't know if High weight lows reps is the way to go.

Like bruce lee was, I don't want to get big, I want to get strong and fast.

I read up on his exercises and he did a mixture. Low reps heavy weights, and then after that low weights heavy reps.

And I hear about his hundreds of pushups and situps and bunches of other ab exercises. And it seemed to work awesome for like, the BEST MARTIAL ARTIST EVER.

Yet I hear things like doing that everyday is overdoing it.

JEEZ I DON"T GET IT...

Sorry this was so freakin long...felt like I just wrote my life story.....thanks though!

With all things, you must approach it with a degree of moderation. You can't jump into it full swing and expect immediate results. Bruce Lee practiced for many years before he reached a state of physical conditioning where he was able to workout like that.

My recommendation is, don't try to emulate him. Just try to better yourself.

I hear things like doing that everyday is overdoing it.

Your body, just like you, needs to rest and heal. If you exercise hard, you need to give your body at least one day a week where it is doing 'nothing' strenuous.

Well, about 6 days ago, my joints in my legs, and my arms were hurting like crap...I mean like, I couldn't really lift anymore.

You should go to your doctor about this. Whatever input I can provide on this... is just speculation. Considering this, it sounds like tendonitis, probably caused by not taking in sufficient amount of water and exacerbated by your previous diet program. I'm not okay with most diets out there. Most hurt your body more than help, and many of them encourage foolish dehydration systems. Anyway, i have tendonitis right now, in my shoulders, and am undergoing physical therapy. Eventually, they will heal and i'll be back to hurting myself in brand new ways. Stay positive and seek professional advice. Get a physical check-up and have your joints checked out.

Welcome.

make sure that the diet you are on is safe for the types of work outs that you are doing. You need to make sure that you are getting the proper nutrients into your body so that you can get stronger and stay healthy...

As it was said before, moderation is the key. You can't switch a sedentary life with a drastic sport schedule without having problems. Take it easy. Little effort at first and when you are used to it, complicate a little bit your routine and get to harder stuff. Thus you'll reduce the risks and have a flow in your training. Overtraining is detrimental for the beginners (you've already seen this). Instead of training like a pro for a week and the spending weeks with no training sessions due to injuries, try to train with moderation in order to be able to go there next week too :)

permanent training (though moderate at first) is better than one with leaps and gaps.

And not to forget. Your body is indeed a temple, but it's YOURS. Love it and don't put it through such pains. learn to listen to it's needs and when you've reached that harmony it's gonna be OK.

PS this comes from someone who's over trained this week.:) Do what the priest says, not what he does

Sounds to me like you over did it. No sweat, we've all done it once or twice. If you're doing heavy weight, you have far too many reps. Might I suggest http://forum.bodybuilding.com. They are a wonderful forum with LOADS of information. Read the stickys there, and ask quesiton. There are a few jerks that will probably do some eye rolls, just ignore them. I'll post more later, I have to get to work. :)

thanks guys.

I think I am gonn start back slow tommorow maybe doing a half a mile run instead of a 3 mile jog.

yeh, I think its pretty much tendonitis too.

And yay, my friend recommended me a good Akido school in my area, and a good kung foo school, so hopefully my martial arts journey will begin soon :)

I think White Warlock is right. It sounds like tendonitis. I've done this a couple of times myself trying to jump back into exercise and pick up at the same level where I had left off before. Believe me, while the mind may not know the difference, your body will certainly keep you posted on what's happening. Relax and take your time. It took time to get out of shape, so it's going to take time to get back in shape. Good luck.

I've done this hard training in the gym for 2 days, last summer. The third time I couldn't even move. My arms were swolen from the effort, and it took 2 weeks to get rid of the pain. So let's start lightly :)

Ouch! that sucks bigtime. 2 weeks off for 2 days?

Its so hard to take it easy your first few weeks though, cuz you just don't feel like your doing any good if your not maxing out and doing your hardest......ya know?
