What kind of techniques do you use to win your sparring partner?

1. Your own skill: spar like a gentleman/lady

2. Intimidate them first with your aggression then apply your techniques

3. Spar to defend yourself

Just curious if you don't mind sharing. I just want to know your mental state and strategy when you are in the sparring situations whether at practice, promotion, or tournaments.

Thanks for sharing.

The key word here is 'partner.'

Sparring is a low-key exercise, where you are trusting them not to put you in the hospital, and they are, in turn, trusting you. A tournament is not a sparring session, although maintaining respect and demonstrating restraint is still essential.

Sparring, in general, should be restrained. On the occasions i do spar, i practice 'different' things. My goal is not beat my 'partner,' it is to better 'myself' and to examine the effectiveness of various techniques or approaches. If i repeatedly apply a technique that works quite well against a particular 'partner,' I am limiting my learning experience and enforcing a flaw in my partner's defensive techniques. This does not serve either of us.

Well, normally not. I do defend myself of course if you don't defend yourself you'll get hit, when I have a sparring match firts of all I let my partner show his moves if he is not good at the moves his doing I'll hit him hard with the moves and study my partner wheather he is aggrssion type, steady type, etc I tend not to run away if am with a very good aggreesive partner I walk side steps in cirrcle and let him do the work then cam out on top with my basic combos pretty successful yet davastating, if you know how to punch, block, and kick you're able to win a sparring match they come with all differnet shape, size, attitude but all have weaknese.

A karate punch it is like a dasvasted stick blow. Instead, a blow of Kung Was is comparable to a lash with a chain that has attacked, allaltra extremity one ball of ferro

Since I spar only on my school (not for turnements) I have about the same attitude as White Warlock. I just practice my techniques without intimidate him on the contrary if is too shy as sometimes happens I even encorage him or try to make him feel more confident. I always spar at light/moderate contact anyway.

The goal while sparring in the dojo is to improve yourself and your partner. We work with each other. If your partner has an opening point it out, give a little shot. If your partner has a weakness, tell him, work with him (or her :) ). You will do them no good when they do not know their weakness and you will do yourself no good believing it is just that easy to hit someone. That is until someone bigger and better comes along.......

Winning in the dojo is irrelevant. Just think of that Sienfeld episode with Kramer as the "dojo champion". :P :D :D :D

Pain is only temporary, the memory of that pain lasts a lifetime.

White Warlock, good post. I have to agree with you and the others who've posted on this. Even in hard contact sparing you aren't out to just beat the opponent into submission. Sparing is not about 'winning', but learning.

I have to agree with most of the guys here. I learn something about myself and my partner everytime we spar. I think that is what sparring is about - learning. If you intimidate and pound someone when sparring I think you defeat the purpose of it. IMHO :karate:

Sparring is about learning.... to win. If you just want to learn a technique do a drill. Sparring is about making your techniques work against a resisting, responding person. By its very nature it's competitive.

You'll do your partner the most service by showing no mercy - supposing you're somewhere around the same level.

In dojo sparring is my time to practice new techniques and get better at them. I view intimidation as a technique that can help you win. Sparring is as much a mental exercise as it is a physical one.

When it comes to intesity, I'm not out to hurt anyone, but I will match my fierceness with that of my oponent. (i.e. if he wants to come in with full contact, I'm going to return the favor)
