focus102
Hi all, I'm not sure where to post this so I'm putting it in the general section. Here's the problem: I am currently training in Shotokan Karate and we train barefoot. I need to wear orthotics to correct an improper foot alignment so I am wearing shoes. I bought Pine Tree Martial Arts shoes but they have absolutely NO friction on the floor that we use (we rent space from a dance studio). The friction is perfect with bare feet but with the shoes I am just sliding all over the place and can't properly do any of my movements because I am tensing my inner thighs all the time just to keep from sliding into a split. Does anyone know of any shoe that has a good friction? Or is there a product I can put on the bottom of the shoe to create friction? Thanks. "Nothing is impossible to the willing mind." gheinisch
Check some of the Martial Arts supply places. There is a link at the top of the home page to a good supplier. Click on it and then go down to uniforms and click on shoes. They have a good selection at all price ranges. There is a kung fu shoe with rubber soles for around six bucks, that might be all you need. krunchyfrogg
I don't know anything about martial arts shoes, but I can tell you that taking a razor blade to the soles of old style dress shoes, and making a few lines (NOT going all the way through!) would increase traction. SevenStar
When I was in longfist, I tried macho's shoes... I tore them after about a week. I wouldn't reccomend them to anyone. But who knows, maybe I got a bad pair. I like Feiyue shoes.
SaiFightsMS
I train in shoes and find that some are very slippery on smoother floors. I have found that crosstrainers work better for me than the actual martial arts sneakers especially with something like orthotics. Something else that helps is making sure you wear your designated martial arts shoes indoors only and regularly clean off the bottoms of the shoes. A fine layer of dust adds to slippage problems. WolverineGuy
You could go the dance route and get shoe grips. They have an adhesive that sticks to the bottom of your shoes, and they provide pretty decent traction. Talk to the dance people at the studio. aefibird
Try ordinary cross-trainers (sneakers), as they tend to have better grip than martial arts shoes. I have a pair of Blitz MA shoes and a pair of Adidas MA shoes and both are fine, although the Adidas ones cost more!! "Was it really worth it? Only time and death may ever tell..." Sasori_Te
Wrestling shoes are much better than martial arts shoes and are comparable in price. They are also a lot sturdier from my experience. Edited February 11, 2004 by Sasori_Te A block is a strike is a lock is a throw.
