Hello,

I am having shoulder issues (again) I can't get in to see the doctor right away. I was wondering if someone could tell me what a torn rotar cuff feels like? Does the pain subside with rest? I am desperately praying that this is not what has happened. Any info would be comforting......

Thanks

rotator cuff injuries are fairly common and can usually be healed by resting for a few weeks. take anti inflammatories to keep inflammation down. there are also exercises you can perform to aid in recovery - a physical therapist can reccomend several.

BUT, that applies to minor lesions. If the cuff is completely torn, the doc will likely operate.

And if you keep using a torn rotator cuff you can wind up totally unable to even raise your arm. I have torn rotator cuffs in both shoulders.

do not lift your arm straight up, that is painful and doesn't help the cuff.....it took me about a year to get mine completely healed....

That which does not destroy me will only make me stronger

If you'd torn it i think you'd know about it!! it would swell up very big and hurt a lot. I managed to damage mine quite badly when i fell off my bike. I dislocated my shoulder and broke my collar bone!!!

I pull mine quite often, just a little strain can leave me quite uncomfortable for a week or more. It feels like my shoulder is slightly out of joint and doesn't feel to great but with rest it goes away.

The rotator cuff is one of those minor muscle groups that is important to stabilise the joint but very difficult to strengthen. You rarely conciously use it, as its range of motion is to twist the arm at the shoulder. its the muscle you'd use arm wressling or reverse arm wressling. I tend to use cables (resistance machines) to strengthen mine which i find helps a lot.
