Retaining black belt status

ESA-Shotokan

Recommended Posts

From the style i come from if i left after gaining my shodan then came back and said i had to start at 10kyu then i would not be happy.

Kyokushin grading involves 40 rounds of full contact sparing ..not aiming at the head...

the grading goes for about 4-5 hours in which one and a half hours of that is fighting. very physical and mental test. In which when you recieve it you know that you have worked extreamly hard for and mentally awarding of the achievment

That's not fair. Try to find a dojo that will recognize the rank you have thus far earned. Just because you stopped training for a while doesn't mean that you never earned your rank.

However, out of respect, the person who comes back after a long time or is from another style, should wear a white belt at first and then talk to the Sensei. Let them know your situation and see what they think is best.

I have a different opinion in the two cases.

If someone took a break and then comes back it should retain his status because anyway he has earned it. If he is out of shape he may take longer to get to the next level.

If he comes from a different style and a different school I think he need to be re-tested whenever he is ready. Because the new style and school may have an entirely different standard.

I'd do agree to KarateForums sempai, once you earend your rank you are permanately earnded the belts.

A karate punch it is like a dasvasted stick blow. Instead, a blow of Kung Was is comparable to a lash with a chain that has attacked, allaltra extremity one ball of ferro

Nope. That isn't right. What's so magical about a dan rank that makes it permanent? What makes kyu ranks irrelevant? So I suppose that means that if you are a kyu, then you really haven't accomplished anything worthy of recognition? A rank is a rank dude.

We all come from different backgrounds and have different

perspectives. this is one of the dangers and some of the fun

of these kinds of discusion boards.

There is nothing "magical" about Dan ranks.

In the world i travel in though, they are permanent

within your own style.

I have said nothing derogatory about Kyu ranks.

Dojos disapear if there are no Kyu ranks! If you think

i implied they are irrelevant that is your own attribution.

Technically, if someone is gone for more than

three months, they can be "Demoted" in the

system i follow. I typically do not do this, and just

give them a while to get back up to snuff.

A rank is a rank dude
, that is very true.

this sentance probably just means two different things to us

Tell me what you think.......

Thanks.

The patch or crest worn by Isshinryu karateka often raises admiration and curiosity. The patch is based on a day dream Tatsuo Shimabuku had in the fifties while he was creating his karate style. This dream was the missing piece in the puzzle called Isshinryu. The patch is often incorrectly called Mizu Gami, which means 'water goddess'. Originally the Isshinryu emblem was called 'Isshinryu No Megami', which means 'Goddess of Isshinryu'. The goddess is the Goddess of Isshinryu karate and not the goddess of water.

i dont want to disrespect anybody for my ideas, so please dont be offended, but i think that during any kyu grade if you do not train for 6 months you should start again from white, unless of course you have a good reason(illness etc),

i agree with this but in our case if your kyu grade and your absence is 6 months or more you go back to zero regardless of any reason

..if you gain at least shodan or higher, but not train for at least one year you should on regard yourself as 1st kyu not a dan grade, and if anyone wanted to train in another style, regardless of grade in other style, then they shud start at 10th kyu or whatever is the lowest grade, i study shotokan but say if sensei kanazawa wanted to take up shukokai, and i was a shukokai sense, i wud expect him to start at white belt, regardless of the fact he is a 10th dan shotokan

i agree also but we are little more leniant in this case. we allow any dan rank to retain his rank regardless of how many years he is absent if he wants to take the next higher dan rank he better pass or he stays at his current rank. however if you are of kyu grade of another school or style and decide to join you have to go back to zero. if dan grade and wants to retain it you'll have to take the test. or go back to zero. i would suggest to go back to zero and get promoted thereafter.

why did we surrender lord?

It's a long time ago I got my high school diploma (the equivalent actually). Do you want to take it away from me, because I haven't been there for a while?

At a certain point you do an exam for something and you earn your diploma. That diploma is for life, no one can take that away from you.
