may be kinda unusual, but i'm a professional pianist, feel very attracted to martial art and am looking forward to start to train. i am though extremely concerned for my hands. can anyone suggest a kind of "hands safer" martial art? I know this question might sound silly as, i guess, in every sport there are some injuries risks. neverthless i was thinking of tae kwon do as it involves pretty much kicks more thhan hand tecniques and it looks safer to me. i also love their flashy kicks.....i'd like some suggestions from the experts.......THANKS ! :D

Join Tai Chi Chuan if you can but it is kind of hard to join a martial art that does not use that hands that much, most or maybe all martial arts requires the use of the hands.

tai chi is a bad idea.

there is a lot of joint locks and throws and controls that centre around grips and grabs of the fingers.

well, unless you join one of the many places that teach tai chi as a spiritual, calming, self improving, non aggressive martial art by a guy who insists on wearing chinese gard and has interesting facial hair...

Definately don't do Judo or BJJ. My fingers are a mess - swollen joints and constantly aching.

Shootfighting - 3rd Degree Black Belt

Karate, or TKD would probably be safe.

DM, I love it! CU Boulder has "lunchtime drop in Tai Chi," available, and I went once. The instructor was a little aerobics instructor type, who had attended a weekend seminar in how to teach Tai Chi for fun and fitness. Gag! :spitlaugh:

if theres ever bin an injury in our class, its something to do with the legs, never has somebody in our class expreienced a hand injury as a result of tae kwon do

I think that also kickboxing is safe for the hands.

We always keep boxing gloves and the additional wrappings. Of course we don't do any breaking (pay attention to this if you join karate or TKD).

Best luck for your MA and your music career.

in any case,

just to be safe, make sure you have your hands wrapped properly cos your wrists are under even more strain most of the time.
