KickChick Posted October 29, 2001 Posted October 29, 2001 Do everything possible to strengthen your immune system! Not only for flu season but also to resist the threat of anthrax and smallpox! Here was something that was sent to me by the American Fitness Professionals & Associates (AFPA) What is the immune system? The immune system of our body is our body's defense system. It protects us from foreign particles that enter our body. It could be divided into two categories: non-specific defenses and specific defenses. The non-specific defenses include: 1. The skin is a barrier to remove foreign invaders and acts as a physical barrier. 2. the mucous membranes which act to trap and 3. cilia, which line the respiratory tract and sweep away foreign materials that are inhaled 4. the acid in the stomach, which destroys microorganisms that are ingested 5. the circulatory white blood cells, which engulf and destroy foreign invaders that enter into the blood 6. the interferons, which are produced by cells that have been infected with a virus and carry a signal to adjacent cells, thereby protecting them from the infecting virus. The specific responses are mediated through the immune system, which recognizes the particular invading substance and responds specifically to that substance. The Anatomic Response, the Inflammatory Response, and the Immune Response are the three types of defense responses in the immune system. The first line of defense against foreign particles is the Anatomic Response. An example will be the stomach acid and the skin. Anatomic barriers prevent foreign articles from entering into our body. If foreign articles do get through the first line of defense, then the second line of defense attacks them, which is the Inflammatory Response. The Immune Response is the central part of the immune system. It is the key fighter that protects us from foreign invaders. HOW TO STRENGTHEN AND MAINTAIN A HEALTHY IMMUNE SYSTEM 1.Cut out eating anything with fat such as animal flesh and dairy products. Eliminate all foods and drinks that are not good for you. (You know what they are.) 2. Exercise as vigorously as you can five days a week for at least 15-20 minutes, if you possibly can, preferably outside. 3. Drink 6-8 glasses of water a day. 4. Get sufficient rest preferably retiring well before midnight. 5. Get at least 15 minutes a day of sunshine on your skin if possible. 6.Develop an attitude of gratitude. Learn to be thankful for all things. (This alone is an immune enhancer.) _________________ 1st Deg. iamrushman Posted October 29, 2001 Posted October 29, 2001 SENSEI KICKCHIK: well said and well put........... would like to add: 6a) reduce stress from your life 6b) be humble do you agree sensei?............. rushman (karate forums sensei)3rd dan wtf/kukkiwon"saying nothing...sometimes says the most"--e. dickerson
KickChick Posted October 30, 2001 Author Posted October 30, 2001 Yes Sensei iamrushman I do agree. 'Humble', is easy. I believe the whole world (except maybe a group of crazy people) have been humbled by experiences of late. As far as stress....I believe stress is inevitable in our way of life - in our quality of life now with these warnings of more danger against us. Makes one want to find that deserted island and bake one's butt in the sun while sipping one of them umbrella drinks!!! Now that would be a stress-free, humbling way of life. _________________ 1st Deg. Musashi Posted November 26, 2001 Posted November 26, 2001 Cool Thread. I also would like to add that supplementation of Vitamin C is also a good way to boost the immune system.
