Tibby Posted November 9, 2003 Posted November 9, 2003 Try to aim a little hire then your shoulder. If it is lower then your shoulder, you will use the weight to much, and if it is parallel, you will no doubt end with it to low. Draw in insiable line where your shoulder is, and do not go below it. Use a little speed. Not a lot, but a small amount. What I'm tryign to say it, don't race it, but don't go in slow-mo.nice, even pace. Keep in mind the return trip is just as important as the first hit. And don't swing random punches and wild. Swing in single puches and combos.
Drunken Monkey Posted November 16, 2003 Posted November 16, 2003 i've got a big rubber-band kinda thing that goes around your back with grips for both hands (that is such a poor description... sorry guys) anyway, if you imagine, it offers resistance in the direction/plane of the punch and works pretty well for push ups as well. i'll try to find a picture of it for you. Martial_Artist Posted November 17, 2003 Posted November 17, 2003 It does feel weird hitting a bag while holding the weight. Which is why I recommended eventually dropping them to practice hitting with a fully closed wrist. I really like using ankle weights wrapped around your wrist, or wrist weights when hitting a heavy bag. I like free weights for going through the motions. Weighted resistance against gravity is a good way to develop strength in the muscles you need for speed. To develop power in your punches it is imperative to hit a heavy bag and develop proper form. DokterVet Posted November 19, 2003 Posted November 19, 2003 You are better off doing proper weight training and heavy bag work. It's okay for fun every once and a while, but the force of gravity is pulling the weights down. You are punching forward. Forces at 90 degrees don't affect eachother. So the resistance is not opposing your motion. Sure, you'll face a little bit of momentum to get the weight going, but not much. 22 years oldShootwrestlingFormerly Wado-Kai Karate
Tibby Posted November 19, 2003 Posted November 19, 2003 What force do you think slows you down when you Punch? Gravity. Still, would not suggest punches a bag with weights in hand. Bag work, weight training, and a little resitance punching.
YoungGrasshopper Posted December 5, 2003 Posted December 5, 2003 Ok this is driving me to major confusion. You are better off doing proper weight training and heavy bag work. It's okay for fun every once and a while, but the force of gravity is pulling the weights down. You are punching forward. Forces at 90 degrees don't affect eachother. So the resistance is not opposing your motion. Sure, you'll face a little bit of momentum to get the weight going, but not much. That was exactly how my opinion was before. But now I'm confused because...it will make your deltoids stronger though Aren't deltoids one of the most primary muscles for punching? Even just punching the bag alone without weights, my deltoids will burn. So...punching with weights...nay or yay?
Tibby Posted December 5, 2003 Posted December 5, 2003 I think you are confused. Your delts are your shoulders, and they do a bit of everything. Your shoulder don't move one way like your elbows or knees, they move in all directions, and they deltoid controlls all of that.
Thuggish Posted December 21, 2003 Posted December 21, 2003 one of newtons laws states that objects in motion tend to stay in motion, and objects at rest tend to stay at rest. this means that when punching with a weight in your hand (or weighted glove) it will be slower because there is an additional weight that you are pushing forward (towards your target) from rest (your stance- presumably hands in front of face.) this means that punching with the weights will make you faster without them, but it also means that you are at risk for hyper extending if you go too fast. tibby is right about everything except gravity slowing your punch down- it has negligable effect. anyway- doing the exercises tibby was talking about will make your punch faster more than anything. stronger is possible- but id recommend heavy bags and weights for that. a broken arm throws no punches
