Topic Posted October 21, 2003 Posted October 21, 2003 I have sprianed both of my thumbs at least 5-7 times each in a rel short period of time, this happend when i punch and i catch the thumb on the elbow of the opponent. Anyway my question is how can i condition and strengthern the thumbs now? After all this abuse theyre pretty loose and it doesnt that much force to sprain them again.
battousai16 Posted October 23, 2003 Posted October 23, 2003 i've got two words for you: video games they've worked wonders for me other than that, grip training exercises perhaps help "I hear you can kill 200 men and play a mean six string at the same time..."-Six String Samurai
Cheradenine Posted October 23, 2003 Posted October 23, 2003 I'm with you on this one.. below will see a topic I started about pretty much the same thing I just taped it up and hope for aspeedy recovery, but 1 week on its still hell..
shotochem Posted October 23, 2003 Posted October 23, 2003 Hi Cheryl, The problem is not with conditioning your thumbs. You should work on punching properly. You should not be making any contact with your thumbs. You must keep a tight fist with your thumb tucked firmly under. You should be striking with your knuckles (in shotokan the first 2nuckles are emphasized)not the fingers. Keep your wrist strait and and lined up with your knuckles. A tight fist lessens the chance of injury due to impact and hooking on to things. Practice slowly then work up speed a heavy bag will let you know if you are puncing properly. Pain is only temporary, the memory of that pain lasts a lifetime.

Cheradenine Posted October 23, 2003 Posted October 23, 2003 You must keep a tight fist with your thumb tucked firmly under.Yeh that's pretty much the conclusion I came to and mentioned in the topic I created about my second sprained thumb Good advice, but now it's REALLY hard to keep the thumb in as it's strained under the force of putting out the fist, and even th other hand is losing speed as Hiketei hurts it as well All part and parcel huh?
SaiFightsMS Posted October 25, 2003 Posted October 25, 2003 The proper positioning of the thumb should become easier with training. You can try getting your fist and thumb into the proper position and holding in position while you are doing things like watching television.
Darce Posted October 25, 2003 Posted October 25, 2003 The first thing our sensei told us was how to punch, and where to put the thumb. Your sensei should have done the same thing to you. Shukokai Karate, Orange belt ( 7. kyu)
Topic Posted October 25, 2003 Author Posted October 25, 2003 Yes i knwo how to punch properly, thats not the problem, the problem s when i punch and the defender has a elbow out, in a clinch while trowing body unches i cant see his arms so my thumb just catches it. Anyway this post wasnt aobut propre punching, i want to know some tips on strengthening the thumb etc.
SaiFightsMS Posted October 25, 2003 Posted October 25, 2003 In time your thumb will tuck further under than it is now. I understand what you are talking about I just can't think of how to describe it right now. By any chance are your thumbs super tight at the base joint or super loose?
