I'm not convinced with the hypnosis argument for being effective in combat.
benefits of
mind, pyschological, mental, training in combat,
keep in mind hypnosis is a tool used by psychologists

I'd like to see them go to India and do some wrestling.
Also Africa and do some long stick fighting.

I had a CD I use to play when I taught class.
when I put it on, people new that class was gonna start, and it helped them
get in the mood.
mainly just for warmup. And for the times I wanted to pump them up
for hard workout.
one of my favorite drills: hit the bag for 60 sec as fast as you can.
before they start, I would tell them, this is gonna be hard,
imagine your whole family is watching you, not to mention all of us.
don't let us down. can you take this? you got it? give it your all,
I want you on your knees afterwards if not you didn't give me everything!
imagine the bag as the person you want to fight the most.
I don't care how much you slow down, whatever you do, just don't stop!
take a deep breath, close your eyes,
and if they are too relaxed I tell them to slap their body and
wake themselves up.
I put on the music loud and say: are you ready? Let's get it on!!!!
ah the power of music.

the ones that are popular with self-training seems to be
Nunchaku & Butterfly knives.
next is I think something like throwing knives & escrima sticks.
add a bo/jo in there too
for me the nunchaku is easier to learn than the butterfly knife, but
once I got the hang of the butterfly knife... I'm all about it now,
since you can do many of the nunchaku movements for the
butterfly knife anyway!

using a bazooka to stop a pickpocket in the mall would be pretty crazy and dumb.
hand grenade is very useful in war but in a jail cell...
I loved the scene in Pulp Fiction when Bruce Wilis grabs the baseball bat,
then sees the chainsaw, but then he knows he found even better, a sword!
it all depends in context no?

-
this is another interesting explanation on the meaning of
internal & external.

shoots firecrackers and
lights up the neon sign
ATHENA ROCKS!!!
the young... so much energy..

I think that if you are assuming that the knife is out of it's holder, then you have to also assume that the gun is.
maybe if they were equal but to me they are pretty different,
for example many knives have more of an advantage in concealment.
if we do it like you said, then it negates one the strongest "points"

of a knife doesn't it?

*blush*
thanx, I'm just ramblin, hehehe

seems to me like many people do these kinds of things thinking
they are funny,
but it only shows how dumb they are,
and being funny is not easy, if you think it's easy and
your not a comedian making tons of money, your probably
not funny but annoying

I think many people forget that being in a relationship is a luxury.
there are plenty of people who have never been with another person
for their entire life.
I've met a lovely attractive widow who was single and stayed that way
she looked 40. I asked her why, and she told me because the love of her
life died in a car crash early in their marriage (high school sweet hearts)
she is not the only person I've met like this.
everyone always wants a GF, wants this kind of GF, that kind of GF,
they always think of what they want in a girl, but have they thought
of what they have to offer? is it really that good? compared to 100s of
other guys?
I say only when you have reach rock bottom, been humbled, and then worked really hard to make yourself better, can you even start to
appreciate the beauty of what is called a woman.
then every day becomes valentines day.
you know that she can leave you at any moment, but your secure,
you won't force her, you let her be the way she is,
just accept what is, and you like a
skilled magician, charm her with your spells. And together grow
nurture what is called love..

well maybe you can relate to this PS1,
back when
UFC just started,
I use to have competitions against other styles at a local
univ. gymnasium.
back when I didn't know much,
I recall getting the mount on some unfortunate guys
that were always bigger, stronger,
and to not panic, I would visualize Royce Gracie,
I could see Royce taking a breath as he mounted
Art Jimmerson
I would also do this when I would get the clinch,
during the storm, I can't see, everything is so fast,
I just don't want to get hit, I imagine the way Royce
clinched up his opponents, and before I knew it,
I'm sweeping the leg.
maybe you guys don't,
but I for sure visualize a lot, even during the match.
And I definitely imagine breaking bones and joints
when I land the submission on a bad person of course

-
my opinion
is that
the main difference between western/eastern,
soft/hard style scientific/energy is this:
mainly your approach in training.
Or should I say it starts there.
I wrote to a world famous Tai Chi guy.
And I said to him that a Boxer whether he knows it or not is
using many Tai Chi principals, and that's why he punches so well.
On the other hand the styles are totally different because Tai Chi
is for an older person, I even speculated that Tai Chi was probably
developed by someone who was like a Boxer,
but then realized that as they aged they needed to change their
regiment in order to still maintain power and be effective.
The Tai Chi guy agreed. btw this guy is known for his Dim Mak stuff,
so it just showed me that his style is so misinterpreted and not only
is he solid, that I was also on the right page

-
if you punch a guy in the face and visualize his head getting smashed into oblivion as you do it,
it shouldn't be too difficult to do.
-
Interesting! From a self-defense point of view, though, doesn't that make it kind of useless, if it only works on the willing?
Again, I've seen a few things on him, and only his students and friends go down. Of course that makes it a neat party trick, but as far as a combat art or martial art, it seems to be without.
well,
since it only works on the willing, that's the trick huh? you got to make them
willing without knowing that they are willing (does that make sense?)
I say it's like a magic trick, the card magically changes while your looking at his hand, while everything is actually going on in the other hand.
I think you can apply this kind of magic trick to combat

awww shucks, a knife thread, of course I must respond!
folder all the way,
if it didn't pose any legal problems, I'd carry a fixed blade,
actually... I'd walk around with a sword, yesss that's it!
(looks at you with a serious face)
-
friendship is more important to me than,
reputation,
business,
and especially
expectations.
so as dissapointing as this is,
you gotta be there for your friend who is
weak and freaking out.
-
I'd go with simple principals.
1. defend the punch/choke/submission/attack
2. control them (you can start by hindering their posture, and work towards getting to a good position for full control)
I think it really helps to look at old school vale tudo tapes,
from a BJJ point of view, your actually too technical, too good for
your own good
for example I'll defend Royce Gracie when he fought Matt Hughes,
Royce is so good, how many times do people get his back in training,
how many times has he trained the rear mount escape since he was a
blue belt?
-
many places need to conduct a business, and that aspect unfortunately becomes stronger than the art.
But if you overlook that, it maybe tolerable.
If it is tolerable, you can train there and it's really up to you to make
your karate good quality.
You just might postively influence your school to pick up the level!
My Dad told me once, if your willing, you can learn even from a bad
example. You will definitely learn what not to do

-
OT- Wow if working at Home Depot caused me back surgery I'd be quite cranky at them!!!
yeah, it's really sad,
many corps could careless about their workers.
I was very lucky to experience relatively hard labor
as such, only as a temporary status, and not be
physically injured, at the time I was also training
BJJ fulltime, on the competition team,
up to 12 classes a week.
-
when I 1st learned this, I was fascinated by it,
I thought it was "THE secret".
It also had lots of contradictions especially when training
in Boxing & Thaiboxing.
Now, for me, they work very well and doesn't contradict
but only help each other out.
all I can say is just have an open mind and make sure
you train in other styles, and keep a positive attitude.

I believe it's true.
my definition is however more complicated. Often times real life
is not black or white, there are much more cases of shades of grey.
It's true that to me it exists and doesn't threaten me in anyway.
As someone stated before if it did exist we would see a lot more of it.
George Dillman who is famous for his 1 touch KO, once said, if it was
that easy to do, I would be in the UFC and be world champion.
In other words it is NOT that easy to do.
from my research, this is my conclusion,
it is a form of hypnosis.
to hypnotize someone the other person needs to be willing.
does this make it useless or fake?
no, to me martial arts is a very broad categorey.
The human expression of war can cover everything from
physical training, health, mental strength, discipline, life style change,
weapons development, and even psychological and media manipulation
such as propaganda.
by learning how to hypnotize someone in a martial arts medium,
it can be very useful in real combat because when you have two
physically and technically even opponents, then the mind starts to
make a huge difference.
on the other hand, according to my research there is also more physical
side to Dim Mak that has to do with herbs & Assassins.
So I say that is still a skill, I know I can't do it.
-
if you get two people with identical body types, similar life styles & environment, have them lift weights,
if one person just lifts while the other lifts but also actively visualizes himself getting bigger, stronger, more massive, they say it makes a significant difference.
If your trying to activate a pressure point, I believe you need to visualize inorder to guide your intent (ki)
from a more western point of view we can say something like, punch through, or imagine your fist is going to destroy their skeletal structure.
