  1. Our instructor sorta incorporates some life lessons but I wouldn't say it's philosophy. He does however tell the history of kung fu and some of their views, but he doesn't use Buddha or anything. He does use some old Chinese sayings.
  2. Staff, Dao, Jindao, Dadao, Ku baton, Knife, escrima . Our main weapons are Staff, escrima, and dao. Arnis is all escrima, single and double. You only train with sticks in Modern Arnis and you learn how to defend against sticks/knifes/swords when unarmed. But a lot of the stick attacks/techniques have unarmed application. However, all of the sticks can be substituted with swords. We are kinda partial to sticks because my teacher's teacher was Remy Presas the creator of Modern Arnis.
  3. I know this is lame but its bugging me, because its the sword our style trains with, its spelled dao. We also use the Jindao(straight Blade) and dadao(2handed dao). I prefer the dao over the katana, to me its faster. I also agree the main thing is on the user, but of course if you have a knife and they have a spear, the odds are against the knife
  4. if they send you an extra one can i have it
  5. Some styles are just more complete. For instance, Sil Lum kung fu (not saying this is the only style) has weapons, punches, kicks, linear, circular, internal, external, take downs, ground fighting, joint locks, rolls, falling, throws etc etc. A lot of styles just teach kicks and punches, some only teach ground etc etc. I am not saying that the teacher and how hard you train has nothing to do with it, if your teacher sucks and you do not train, then no matter what style you take its not going to be effective. When i say some styles are better than others, I am not talking about the philosophies of the style and that part, i am talking about the self defense part. If you want to take a sport oriented style thats fine, if thats what you want. But I am a martial artist for many different reasons: Balance, fitness, the art itself, etc, BUT I also would like to know that I can defend myself against some one attacking me with a knife. I would like to know that if someone swings a stick at me that i have trained to defend myself. I would like to know that i have trained to fight multiple opponents. I am not saying that kung fu is the only good style out there. I am just using that as an example. There are a whole lot of great styles, but imo there are a lot of styles that are lacking on the self defense part.
  6. I have to disagree with this statement. There are some styles that are just better. If you take two people of the same athletic ability, time, and instructor some styles are just better.
  7. Joint locks are not only allowed, they are quite common. The only difference is that almost all fighters will tap out before their joint is broken, but this is because they are aware that their joint could be broken. Groin and throat strikes used to be legal in the UFC as well, but they were not commonly used. Nobody became UFC champion with throat or groin shots. Techniques against the eyes have always been illegal but they do happen accidentally.Joint locks are only allowd on the ground, not from a straight punch.
  8. HAHA that brings back memories... Is that what he is saying? We never knew, we always just made up something, mine was always obdugan.. LOL
  9. Wow what style are you referring too? That seems super fast to me. It takes at least 1 year to go from green to blue, and 1 1/2- 2 years from blue to brown and a minimum of 2 years from brown to black, and after that it can take a while.
  10. Just about every Chinese style is going to have trapping.... Mantis kung fu, sil lum kung fu... the list goes on and on.
  11. I am 99% of the time going to use the instep. Instep is more natural, has better reach, and is faster. I here people saying its easily broken if you kick a hard spot, such as the knee, but I never intend on roundhouse kicking someone in the knee, thats just stupid with whatever part of your foot you use. If i am going to kick to the knee its going to be a thrust kick or a dragon kick.....
  12. I have to agree here, I mean I would never just stand in a horse stance, but if I had a lock on someone and was throwing them, a lot of times I would end up in a horse stance for power. But I would say the most natural would be earth stance or cat stance.
  13. In our style we have a monkey form and learn a lot of monkey techniques. Monkey is mostly ground fighting. It teaches you to fight from on your back and also how to take fights to the ground. It also teaches you how to roll as well. Its not as silly looking as people think. Its actually a very very brutal style of kung fu. Its hard to defend against because its unorthodox. But you have to have strong quads because your are mostly in very low stances. One thing you don't want to do against someone who is fighting like a monkey is kick at them. They will catch your leg, break it, throw you down, then break something else.....
  14. Have you ever seen a real kung fu practitioner in combat, not tournament? We don't do jumping spin kick and stuff, most of our kicks will be to knees and groin.... Also circular is our deflections not our punches, almost all of our punches are linear, you have to realize kung fu is both hard and soft, circular and linear, internal and external , thats why there is so much focus on yin yang. It kills me on peoples perception of kung fu. Also the longer and better you get the shorter the circular deflections get, you want your opponent to barley miss you so he fully commits, they are deflections and are a heck of lot faster than a typical block, because when we deflect we barely even touch the punch its about footwork and never interrupt the natural flow of things.
  15. If someone in the street does this and 99.9% of the time they will come without control, all you have is footwork. All i would do is deflect (using proper footwork) hit him, then go for arm-bar, break, or take down(Praying Mantis philosophy..Deflect, empty, take down) . If they have no control they have no balance and they will over extend their arm and that is an arm-bar/break/throw just waiting to happen.
  16. Do you really think so. From what i saw from the video it would work if the attacker only throws one punch, but if you notice the left hand has a straight shot to his face nearly every time. Even when he pulled the guy to the side he is pulling him with the punch, in turn would just make the punch more natural and do more damage. Thats why i prefer deflections to blocks.
  17. I think a lot of people tend to take chi to a level that doesn't exist. To me chi is just a way of delivering the most energy/power to a specific area... which usually means total relaxation until impact (like popping someone with a wet towel). And realizing how to do it. Learning that all energy comes from the earth first...Stances....I am a devout Christian and i take my relationship with Jesus Christ above all, and i have no problem with chi in this aspect, but some people say they can move people without touching them, making themselves levitate..... to me that is just a bunch of hogwash....
  18. This may be the case with many Eastern Martial Arts, but it is not so for arts around the world. Western fighting arts, ranging from the Greeks to the Romans to the Europeans, had no Eastern roots at all. If you check closely a lot of those did have eastern influence.
  19. In Sil Lum kung fu we learn some a snake form (which is party of the 5 animal form) and some other snake techniques. But with snake most of the moves are very circular/wrapping... like what we call eagle wing, which is wrapping your arm around their arm while going to the neck, in turn dislocating/breaking their elbow while grabbing the neck then take them down. Its really hard to explain without showing....
  20. I study Sil lum kung fu and super love it. If it is around you should check it out, pretty much the samething as shaolin kung fu but with shorter stances and gears more for self defense. It was designed for people who arent monks but for warriors. So its a very self defense oriented style, It has the 5 animals, mantis, monkey, and more, Also has a lot of weapons and weapon defenses....
  21. Yeah there are a ton of ways to get out, but if you just want to get away always work against their thumb. But we are taught many many controls moves when people grab our wrist or arm. If someone grabs me I will break their wrist while throwing them on the ground. We have to learn 5 control moves for our first belt and multiple knife defenses as well.
  22. In our system (Sil-Lum Kung Fu), which is Chinese we have the following: White Yellow Green Blue Brown Black
  23. Yeah I agree hit in the face doesn't hurt as bad as clashing shins together than junk hurts.
