i have been using Google quite a bit. i found what look like a couple cool Kickboxing gyms like these two: http://www.mnkali.com/html/index.php http://www.mmaacombatzone.com/ but i am not finding decent Karate dojo. i also used https://www.yellowpages.com and it looks like a bunch of point fighting "americanzed" Karate which i have no use for and a bunch of tkd which is not what i am looking for. i do a knockdown style and was hoping for one of those, but it seems unlikely. However, often people on these internet boards might know someone from the area, are from there, or have contacts which are under the radar of google searching. thanks anyway. Paul

Go to this link http://www.fullcontactkarate.com And then click on the internal link called "listings" and you will find a break down of some of the major Knockdown oriented styles and if their events are open or closed. Cheers,

yes. An example of a typical touranment we have been to http://www.uskyokushin.com/results/event_2002_10_05.htm This is not the organization I am in personally, but they have open tournaments, and through a decent event. I think that there are so many small organizations in the U.S., that open tournaments are pretty necessary, otherwise the divisons are too small. Of course, there are still some closed tournaments too though.

Examples of Full Contact events http://www.geocities.com/fighting_karate/ I am based in the states, so this list is for the U.S. and some in Canada.

I think that any Karate-ka can decide to fight FUll contact on occasion and good for them, it will enhance training. But in my mind, to be a "Full Contact Fighter" means that this is the diminant style that you train for. it means that you are fighting on a frequent and regular basis for full contact. and this means doing the body conditioning, drills for fighting, etc etc so that when you do fight full cotact, weather it is 1 X a week or 4 X a week, you are getting mentally and physically ready for it all the time. this helps to get accustomed to fighting hard contact, and also actually cuts down on injuries.

Open. Our next Tournament allows 3 second grabs, encircling the leg, pulling down into a knee and some other minor deviations to the Kyokushin Style of Knockdown karate . I am also sponsoring a Byakuren Stylsit to come to my dojo to teach their brand Of Knockdown Karate for a semianr. Fun Stuff! We also Cross train with Kickboxers, as well as other styles who do Knockdown Karate. osu

Personally i like the preparation for Full contact fighting. Body Conditioning, pad work, running, Bag work, all the endurance, building the spirit, gettting ready etc... everything that happens a few months leading up to Full Contact Tournaments, (including the sparring) is the best. I have a guy competing in a month, and we are having fun getting him ready to fight. Hopefully he pulls it all together on fight day but win, lose or draw (oh okay, there is no Draw) I will be happy as long as he gives it his best.

I joined this group about 4 years ago, and that is the way they do it. yes, even in the same style there will be significant differences

We all come from different backgrounds and have different perspectives. this is one of the dangers and some of the fun of these kinds of discusion boards. There is nothing "magical" about Dan ranks. In the world i travel in though, they are permanent within your own style. I have said nothing derogatory about Kyu ranks. Dojos disapear if there are no Kyu ranks! If you think i implied they are irrelevant that is your own attribution. Technically, if someone is gone for more than three months, they can be "Demoted" in the system i follow. I typically do not do this, and just give them a while to get back up to snuff. , that is very true. this sentance probably just means two different things to us
-
well lets do away completely with them then. Seriously, if we had fewer people doing better things, wouldnt that be awesome. imagine. quality.

I think the question to ask is: Do they matter? I think personally that kata "Performance" divisions should be wiped out and replaced with Kata Bunkai and interpretation divisions. if people can get rid of all the crappy kata tournaments and replace it by demonstrating they understand the self defense applications of the kata, that would be much more meaningfull than either a traditional stance, or some strange gymnasitic aeiral triple kick thing. my .02 cents.

Dan ranks = Permanent Kyu ranks = Temporary

As I recently posted in a different thread: http://www.pris.bc.ca/karate/adultsyllabus.htm Typical Kyokushin Syllabus, and the one we follow in my dojo as well.

The Rob kaman Series is fine, but at that time it was common to show a combination or series of techniques, and then show again in slow motion. a little of that goes a long ways, and some of these 2 hour tapes could be distilled down to 20-30 min. I personally do not need to see Shin conditioning by Kicking a tire in Slooooow motion many times. other than that, there is some good stuff on there. Joe lewis also put out a set as well with decent material. if i recall, he does not take into account low kicks though. but he has other material that makes up for that deficeit. good luck! -
nice post. minor correction. Shihan Miura left the organization 2 years ago. nice Bio on him at http://www.australiankyokushin.com/biographies/mmiura.shtml My initial Sensei trained with him for a while. tough as nails. Shihan Miura's New webpage is at http://www.miuradojousa.com/ Regards,

can you tell us more about your club? The things you emphasize, the spirit you instill, what you want students to learn? a litttle on your teaching philosophy etc. hard for me to give any sugeestions without knowing much about you, your students, or the cub. do you have a website? that might help too.

when in rome. what is the cultural expectations of the sensei and of the style should be followed.

there is some um strife in the World Oyama Karate Organization right now. They have had this link up for quite some time. but now it seems to have replaced their main website. Hopefully they get things sorted out soon. I am not saying i approve of this type of thing. If you read the FAQ they provide, you can only rank through the first few low Kyu ranks. not sure if that makes it any better . . . . . Shigeru Oyama is retiring. Or I guess I should say he already has.

it should not say kata is optional. the full contact fighting is optional, for those who are over 35.
