Questions about BJJ
Kyle-san replied to LOILOI44's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
Have you had any experiece with aikido? Kensai wasn't calling BJJ bs, just stating the results of a fight by the heads of the respective styles. I don't agree with his comment about Kodokan Judo, but I'm not going to insult him or his style for it. I thought you were better than that. -
I wouldn't even be able to tell you what kind of gi I wear/how much it originally cost. My sensei gave it to me when he bought a new one.

I'm sure it also has something to do with the fact that many people have elevated him in their minds to a higher-than-human standing. That's enough to give anyone a messiah complex.

Anyone who's ever picked up a martial arts magazine know of Krav Maga.

Questions about BJJ

I wouldn't worry about jiu-jitsu fighter too much, he loves to promote his art every chance he gets. Fairly verbally and agressively, like he's got something to prove. -
I've had a falling out twice in my life in martial arts. The first was when I left my Karate dojo because I wasn't enjoying the experience anymore or learning. Neither of the sensei's that taught there will speak to me with anything more than the barest civility. The other was with my Taekwon Do instructor who has turned a good club into a McDojo. I can't speak to him with any more than the barest civility anymore and often laugh at his "new innovations" for his class. The latest being taking techniques from the Aki Jujitsu dojo I was at and using them as "Taekwon Do self defence". So there are two different cases, neither of which have come to blows, with both teacher and student in the wrong.

It's a mistake to call anyone "great" or elevate them to a higher status just because they've made a few achievements. No matter what they've done these people are still human and are entitled to human opinons and reactions. Frankly, I'm not surprised Oyama thinks this. What really bugs me is the implication that any of these Sensei's are better people than the rest of us because they're talented martial artists and teachers. Thinking like that is just setting yourself up for disapointment.

The physical fitness end of things seems a bit odd to me, just because someone can't do 100 pushups doesn't mean they don't have excellent technique. I do like the idea of a more intellectual side (philosophy, etc) to the tests.

Tournaments and Seminars
Kyle-san replied to NidanWarrior's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Personally, I love the atmosphere at a friendly tournament, especially if it's an open one. Getting to mix with other martial artists and try your skills out (even in a limited fashion) is very appealing. Seminars, to me, seem like overpriced classes. -
I was looking for a clarification in his post, he came back with some shots at me. I still haven't gotten that clarification and, as a result, am still confused.

I've honestly seen "real situations" where a karate practitioner had fewer problems with multiple opponents than a BJJ practitioner. Of course, it might have just been the situation and not the styles, but that's the evidence I've seen. I'm going to assume that since you're mocking karate you don't have much experience with it.

Yeah, I'm extremely uneducated about other martial arts. I was refering to you teaching a person with little to no experience how to do this choke and expecting it to work for them. There was no mention of the use of wrist locks in my post and I was specifically adressing the choke you described. From all evidence I've seen, the strongest grappler wins. Give me an example that proves otherwise and how it relates to my comment. Edit- While you're at it, why don't you adress the last two points I made and if/why they're wrong. All you looked at was my first two points on size and strength.
