  1. Yeah, my dad's an orange belt in Aki Jujitsu (we started at the same time, but I moved away and he stuck around) and my brother picked up his green in TKD and was training in Jujitsu with my dad and I, but is taking a break until he figures out what to do. My mom isn't doing anything right now, but is looking at getting into Tai Chi.
  2. Well, in the one Jujutsu dojo I attended the sensei moved students up when he felt they were ready and had the techniques for that level down pat. At the dojo I'm currently attending the sensei will advance the student when they can run through all the techniques in the list for belt ranks (around 20-25 for white and it moves up from there) and do them smoothly.
  3. 2.5 years for my 1st Kyu in Shotokan Karate. 2 years for my 4th Gup in ITF Tae Kwon Do. I've been in Aki Jujitsu for 10 months now, but have been away from the style for 5 (different city, I'm moving back at the end of April). I've been in Ketto Ryu Jujutsu for 2 months now.
  4. Yeah, I'd just try for the quick wrist lock to control the opponent then go from there if they want to keep fighting.
  5. Ketto Ryu Jujutsu: 1) 3 Groundwork 2) 3.5 Trapping, Throws and Takedowns 3) 1.5 Infighting - Elbows, Knees and Head 4) 1.5 Punching 5) 1.5 Kicking 6) 1 Weapons Aki Jujitsu: 1) 3 Groundwork 2) 4 Trapping, Throws and Takedowns 3) 1 Infighting - Elbows, Knees and Head 4) 1.5 Punching 5) 1.5 Kicking 6) 1 Weapons Tae Kwon Do: 1) 0.5 Groundwork 2) 0.5 Trapping, Throws and Takedowns 3) 1 Infighting - Elbows, Knees and Head 4) 4 Punching 5) 6 Kicking 6) 0 Weapons Shotokan Karate: 1) 0.5 Groundwork 2) 0.5 Trapping, Throws and Takedowns 3) 1.5 Infighting - Elbows, Knees and Head 4) 5 Punching 5) 4 Kicking 6) 0.5 Weapons
  6. I don't see why saying someone under 18 shouldn't be a black belt is a problem. Most of the younger black belts Ive known (and this is just a generalization) have had a lot less understanding of the art and how to teach it. In general an adult black belt will be able to understand and teach better and be much less prone to childish shows of "my art is better than yours". With that being said, I've also seen many exceptions to that.
  7. I've been in a few, yes, but I'm currently only actively studying Jujutsu.
  8. Personally, I'd go with Judo due to the shorter time-frame. If you were doing this training on your own I'd say Aikido.
  9. *Shrug* It's just a belt. Your hard work and training is reflected in your mental and physical state, not in a symbol.
  10. I know that I was picked on verbally for many years when I was younger and the one thing that bugged me the most is noone would help me out. They either ignored what was happening or eventually joined in picking on me. However, you've mentioned that around 30 are picking on this kid, it might be best to help indirectly. Get a teacher or whoever to help out when this is going on or do what JerryLove suggested and get the parents involved.
  11. Based on your body type Tae Kwon Do or another kicking-focused style would probably suit you the best. However, like a few others have said you should find the style that you enjoy the most not the one that could possibly suit your "body type".
  12. Or because the two different ma's do things differently. Personally, I did karate for so long things became completely ingrained, stances especially and when I went over to Aki jujutsu my stances were looked at as "sloppy" by the different standards. Also the way I'd throw I punch or kick (straightening the knee or elbow too much) was wrong in the Jujutsu style. Just little things like that.
  13. The way you align your wrist and knuckles keeps them from breaking when you use your last three. We covered some of that in Wing Chun, but I was only around for 4 months so I don't have much experience.
  14. The only downside to crosstraining [that I've found] is that I tend to shift into bad habits from one style or another (say, Karate) when I'm trying to train in something else (Jujutsu). It leads to many long sparring matches with my sensei while he tries to root them all out. Currently I'm just doing Jujutsu 3x a week.
  15. Personally, I'd recommend the Jujitsu class. It'll probably give you the best balance of moves.
  16. Actually, the version I was taught uses the first two knuckles.
  17. These are the rankings from the styles I took. Shotokan Karate: White Yellow Orange Green Purple (1st) Purple (2nd) Brown (1st) Brown (2nd) Brown (3rd) Black (1-10) ITF TKD: White Yellow-stripe Yellow Green-stripe Green Blue-stripe Blue Red-stripe Red Black-stripe Black (1-10) Aki Jujitsu: White Yellow Orange Green Purple Brown Black Ketto Ryu Jujutsu: White Yellow Orange Green Purple Brown Black (1-10)
  18. Which is really kinda funny if you watch some of his earlier movies right around the time that Bruce died. You can see that Jackie is trying very hard to be the next Bruce Lee.
  19. I've just always had an interest in martial arts and had to start somewhere. It wasn't for any particular reason other than it looked fun to me.
  20. It's just a punch where your knuckles are lined up vertically instead of horizontally. I've also heard of it being called a "Wing Chun punch", but sun punch is the name that I was taught for it.
  21. In the Ketto Ryu Jujutsu class that I attend there are about 3-6 women depending on the day. Usually about a third to one half of the class.
  22. Speaking from my experience, we usually don't have that kind of equipment in a dojo. I usually go to the gym for that, but it's not part of my "in class" training. You did ask for "toughest exercises you do in your school", didn't you?
  23. -Palm block -Inside circle block (upper or lower) -Inside block (hard) -Inside wrist lock -Reverse punch -Sun punch -Knife hand -Front snap kick -Turning kick
  24. Or for a nice variation try planting your foot on their groin for the throw. It doesn't take away anything from the mechanics, but it hurts just that much more.
