  1. Thanks everyone for your suggestions - didn't get a notice saying there were more replies otherwise I'd have checked sooner - so thanks I definitely am going to have to do the modified pushups for the time being - I can figure how y'all can get on your toes - or am I not getting the idea? Anyway - I have a month til the start of class and am walking (at a fast pace) daily and trying to interval train with some light jogging granted it's a slow start. I'm completely terrified about what to expect, but am so looking forward to it as well!
  2. Thanks again TigerDude. From what I understand there will be an "aerobic component" to the Chito Ryu class and I recently heard that the Shotokan class does some work on the core with lots of ab-concentrated exercises. Needless to say I'll be trying to figure out "the plank" and doing crunches everyday til class starts to hopefully build up some endurance!
  3. Great - thanks for your reply. I plan on checking the classes out - I've heard great things about both classes and the instructors so it'll likely be a toss up and come down to the times the classes are offered.
  4. Hello again, I'm looking at two dojo's in town that are offering a beginner's adult class starting within the next month and am wondering what the difference would be between taking a 'Shotokan' class vs. a 'Chito Ryu' class? Thanks!
  5. hello everyone, I'm going to be taking my first "adult beginner" karate class (Chito Ryu) beginning of June. I am probably one of the most unfit people around - granted I have been speed walking and strength training for a few months and have noticed improvements. I'm curious what type of things I should/could be doing at home in preparation for my first class (ie: sit ups/push ups, etc)? We have a multi-gym here as well. I'm not sure what to expect from the class in the way of warmups and training (I'm lucky to do 3 "lady" push ups)...sigh. Ideas and suggestions anyone? Thanks in advance.
  6. What you say makes alot of sense. Having two kids under five years old, I have forgotten what it feels like to do things for myself - and this would be a great opportunity for that.
  7. Thanks for that Bushido - I think you're right in that I will most likely enjoy it - I just need to do it (oh man, starting to sound like a Nike commercial!!). Plus side is, there's a month until the first class of this new session so that's a month on my side to at least building some cardio endurance beforehand! Logically I know that I should be able to be successful in this class - even if it will feel awkward and painful at times...there is always that little twinge of "eek!" when starting something new. I guess the only other 'obstacle' will be uniforms - I'll need to find out what they expect people to wear to class in case I need to special order one...bleh.
  8. Hello everyone, I've been reading through the boards and have seen similar questions like this - so hope you don't mind yet another (although I wager the answers may be similar) I am female, 30 years old and shamefully overweight (twice my "normal" bodyweight). I walk daily and do strength training and have managed to cull 30 lbs off over the past couple of months - but obviously have much further to go. I do not know much about martial arts or Chito Ryu other then what I can read online or through the dojo's website, however, what I've read has piqued an interest and I am considering signing up for a beginner class that is happening over the summer. Do you think it would be possible for this short, "weighty" but committed lady to be successful in a class such as Chito Ryu? There will be an aerobic component to the class which will help me in attaining a more desirable fitness level...but I don't want to take the class and end up looking like a total fool if you know what I mean. Thanks in advance for any advice, support or comments!
