I am still in the stage where I am having difficulty coordinating my movements, I have had 4 lessons Jiu Jitsu right now. The thing is that you will gradually notice that you are getting better. I am starting to do some basic movements on auto-pilot right now, which is a good thing. I have never had good coordination, but by practicing MA I am improving it every day.

Short answer: Way too much time. Just as Patrick I am an Advisor at http://www.sitepointforums.com and that is where I waste a lot of time posting .

Question for you grapplers???
Seth replied to shotochem's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
A judo-gi is your best choice for grappling. You can move around freely and have less risk of having your gi torn apart when being thrown around. -
Those are some cool stats .

Height Advantages in Grappling
Seth replied to moobrack's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
I just had my third lesson Jiu Jitsu, and I am learning some basic throws right now. From my own experience, I can say that the smaller guys had trouble performing a hip-throw with me, because they couldn't get my legs of the ground. I am 6 foot 5, so that was a small advantage for me. Still, I don't think size matters, nore does weight or strength. If you apply a technique right, everybody will fall or be barred, no matter what size, weight or strength they have. -
My first lesson...

O, that was a very easy one. I train traditional Jiu Jitsu. I could have told you right away if I was training traditional or BJJ, I just thought that traditional Jiu Jitsu had different sub-styles. I just see BJJ as a different art . I am still not quite clear on the Kyu part. I am a white belt, does that mean I am a 6th Kyu or something? And then when I get a yellow belt I become a 5th Kyu? -
Yup, Savate... I just couldn't get the name to pop-up .

The way I understood it kickboxing originated somewhere in France (or at least an early form of it) in the 19th century,

Moobrack, sounds like me. I am 6 foot 5 give or take a little, an odd two meter. That doesn't just fall to the floor gracefully, but I am learning it now . I am training in Maastricht, in the Netherlands, at dojo Zenden. If you know anything about soccer, then you might know Boudewijn Zenden. Dutch international, plays somewhere in England if I am not mistaken. It is the dojo from his dad. -

I kind of like the break-falling. Makes me feel all flexible, which I definitely am not. By the way, what does the kyu stand for? -
Hi there Jinx, welcome to Karateforums.com. From the sound of it you have quite a diverse background. I only started Jiu Jitsu a week ago. Anyway, I guess I'll see you around!
-
I unfortunately only have one class per week. I could follow two, but that would not work out for me with going home (I live at campus and during the weekend I go home). My training is on Tuesday night, 21.00-22.00.

That is one way of looking at a white belt. I am just proud to be a white belt, to be involved in Jiu Jitsu. I have actually no clue what type it is, and I still need to figure out my Sensei's rank. He has a black belt, but I am not sure about his Dan. -
Like I never saw your face . No, it is a good thing. I just like to have a face I can stick to a name.

I have not yet been introduced to the names of all the techniques, locks and falls, but all I have been able to practice until thus far are a sort of rolling fall and some techniques on what to do when someone holds you by the shoulder. For example one was hitting the wrist of your opponent with the knife-side of one hand, holding the other one on top of the hand you hit with, and then step back. However, I should only use that if the other guy keeps on doing so. The first few times I should just push him away, or wave his hand off. It is really cool to learn all about the 'mechanics of the body' as my sensei calls it. I just feel very new to all of this, since most of the people in my group have extensive background in Judo or Aikido (most of them hold a brown belt in Judo or even better). I am not very quick in picking everything up, so I will probably be not as fast in reaching the next belt as all of the others, but what counts for me is that I am learning to use my body better. I never thought I was able to dive over two people sitting crouched and break my fall by rolling over my head, but I was . Man, I love this sport . -
Thanks Patrick, it is sure nice to see the face of the staff members. It really makes you feel you get to know them.
-
That would be nice indeed. I for one knew Patrick a little before I got here, but I would love to learn more about the other staff as well .

You can say that again about the Dutch fighters. We also have a few kick-ass free fighters.

I just had my first lesson Jiu Jitsu, and it was way better then I expected it to be. I loved it. I am now officialy a white belt, just waiting for my suit (that thing is called a gi right? ) to arrive, together with the belt. All I was allowed to do is practice falling with three other guys who were new to martial arts and do some basic moves to understand what Jiu Jitsu was about. I have quite a diverse group, of about ten people. One brown belt, one blue belt, two yellow and a few white ones. Most of them will be one yellow or higher within a few weeks I reckon, since they all practiced Judo, Aikido or both a lot. Man, I am so excited about the second lesson. A pity I only have one per week .

A big no no, if you ask me. I don't hit women just like that. If I was slapped, it would probably be only once -- as is with most of the slaps you get from a woman. If she attempted to do this another time, I would just block.
-
Well, my 18th birthday ( a few days ago ) and my very first year of Martial Arts coming up. Will be having my first lessons in a month or so I hope.

To be honest, I don't have much experience with this, but if you ask me I would not fight at all. At least, I wouldn't kick or punch. I would just evade his blows, or block them, and make no attempt to kick him myself. That is of course is the situation was in school.
