  1. Does anyone know any good exercies or tips for improving balance? I am really trying to improve my balance to be able to do a double kick , like mid then high without putting foot down? Also It would help if I could get an estimate on how long it would take as I really would Like to be able to do this in like two months Thanks all , btw I am going for my orange belt test on may 27th on Sunday
  2. Hello All! Recently purchased a Bokken and was wondering if theres any drills or practice techniques that work to improve swordsmenship. (Didn't know if this is right forum for this ) , Also Should I wrap the hilt of it in tape for better grip? Not really having trouble gripping it though.... PS: If your right handed are you supposed to grip the Bokken or any sword with your right hand on top? Because Im right handed and I put my left on top and find it much easier. Thanks all!
  3. I was just wondering how many of you have ankle weights? What weights do they come in? how much were they? and If you saw a definite improvement in your performance from using them? Thanks all
  4. Hello all! Entering my fourth tournament now , I got my yellow belt and I have learned all of Heian Nidan. But I was just wondering considering some of you are black belts. If you were judging a lower belt kata division , what would you rather see? A well done Heian Shodan , or a average heian Nidan? Basically a Well Done simple kata , or an average higher kata?
  5. Hi All! I Recently went in the light kickboxing division at our tourney. First matchs were easy enough. But in the final I thought I had lost, the guy I fought had excellent combo's , lots of control( where I kinda didn't haha windmill) and in the last 15 seconds had so many punches. But the main thing is I landed waaay more kicks , just single kicks and a few doubles , and a spinning back hook kick to the neck. Now I thought I lost but amazingly the judges went the other way? Now the point I'm trying to make is? In light kickboxing do the judges tend to concentrate alot more on the kicks that are landed than the punches?
  6. Haha Sorry for being on Hiatus for a bit guys but I went on to win sparring in that division and place first in the sparring division for the home tournament! So far I have won all five of my sparring matches in tournaments 5-0 , 5-0 , 5-0 , 5-0 , and 6-1. Though I am in the lowest belt division white-yellow(sometimes orange). I find I score 70% of my points from an instep side thrust kick or a lunging backfist. I also find a quick drop of the shoulder then lunge in with five quick jabs. Also a bluebelt showed me a cheeky move where you step up , gently step on their boot and when they look down get a quick point haha but thank you for all the advice guys!
  7. Just a quick question about Katana's , Say if you got one made , could you put an engraving on it with something? like something in japanese characters or maybe even normal english?
  8. Hello all , I was just wondering because I think I'm pretty flexible but I can't seem to do my side kicks , roundhouse kicks and such in class , I can do them but not really as high as I like them. I have no problem in point sparring or kickboxing , but it seems like maybe my legs lack the strength to hold them up and chamber slowly? Would anyone be as kind to point out some specific leg training exercises to increase the strength or make it easier?
  9. Hey all! I was just wondering if some of you knew some good training tips for improving the speed and/or technique of your backfist, as its the main technique I'm working with in point sparring right now.
  10. One thing I noticed that works for my is get a five pound weight in your hand , go into the appropriete stance and practice your punches at full speed with the weight in your hand while breathing properly with your punches. It seems to have sped up my punches especially my reverse punch. Just remember not to hyperextend yourself
  11. WHOOT! I got first place in my division! I only had one opponent though but I won by a 5-0 blank! Two lunging backfists , one instep side thrust kick , one roundhouse kick , and one reverse punch , the only time the other person it me was when I lunged and got kicked in the side of the thigh!!!!!! WHoot! thanks for the help guys
  12. HmmHmm ok from your posts I think I can conclude I don't have the skills to use flying kicks legitimitatly , but what about the lunge backfist? It seems to work very well against opponents , It gets my typical sparring partner everytime ( This is Chris for Obiwansbane )
  13. Whoot! Tournament on Friday! Getting pumped! I also like using a lunching backfist to the head , like one lunge really fast for the point , seems to be working well ,also are any flying kicks legitimate in point sparring , like a flying front thrust kick?
  14. Hello all! First time poster Going to my first ever karate tournament on the 24th of Febraury and I am very psyched about point sparring. I am a white belt as of now , but I might be belt testing on the 18th for my white/yellow belt and yellow belt, But I don't know for sure. I was just wondering if there are any low belt combinations that I would be able to execute in point sparring? I am pretty flexible and can execute basic kicks ( Front , Side , and roundhouse , and working on my hook ) and am pretty agile , I think I'm a defensive evading type in sparring. I like to keep my distance and throw kicks But I would like to really work on some point sparring combinations! Looking forword To replies! Btw I am seventeen , So I'm against sixteen and seventeen year olds , and I was told I will be facing anywhere from white to green belts. I also study Shotokan
