Anybody Ever Create a Kata for Baseball?
DWx replied to trag's topic in Instructors and School Owners
Surely just creating a kata where kids have to do a set sequence of actions isn't that bad? So they do mimic a batting stance, swing, step forward, catch a ball, turn left, throw to another player, step forward again etc. Not a true kata but something to get them remembering all the different movements and that they can practice at home. (apologies for the very untechnical baseball terms ) -
If you can't find it in normal Karate kata, maybe he borrowed it from a different system and modified it to Karate? A lot of the TKD Chang Hon forms start in that sun/moon position and since large chunks of the Shotokan kata were taken and modified to create the forms, I guess it would be pretty easy to reverse the process and fit them to Shotokan movements. All he'd have to do is rename it or use the Japanese version of the name. Or maybe he made it up himself? Are there any bits of it you can remember like specific combinations/kicks/other movements that might help people to identify it?

Yeah very annoying in that I can't really plan for it properly. Resell website doesn't open until next year either so its not like you can resell any excess tickets straight away. Student overdraft is a wonderful thing though. Gives me a while to pay it back into the account. Lucky you being in London. I'm at uni in York which'll be ridiculous to get down to London from. The parent's house is in Leicester which is a bit closer but still nowhere near. But might not have to have a hotel because I only applied for the afternoon/evening sessions so I could maybe travel down in the morning.

Totally agree with you here Bob. First on the quality. Unless its someone or something I really want to watch, I don't have the patience to sit through a blurry video or audio with tons of background noise. Same with written stuff. Can't be bothered to read through massive chunks of poorly worded waffle. And I too hate hate hate watching or reading stuff where its the author going on about how fantastic they are. Maybe its a bit vague but I think good martial arts media, whatever it is, has the power to inspire. I watch a lot of TKD videos on YouTube and the good one's really do have the power to make you want to get up and go training. Been inspired by magazine article's before when they've written about someone and their MA journey or even just article's that describe a new way of doing these can make you want to put the effort into your training. Even all the apps can inspire to try out something or go put the training hours in.

Welcome to KF Jeff . Never heard of it but I don't think its such a bad idea! Maybe not so useful for adults but for kids its probably a great way of getting them to remember and practice. -
Brian (bushido_man96) Reaches 20,000 Posts!

Congrats Brian! 20K's worth of great posts too! -
Wow I feel neglected. We didn't do anything. My dad never even came to watch any of mine or my sister's dan gradings. Think I came home, had a shower and went to bed.

When a friend is testing for godan.
DWx replied to Shizentai's topic in Share Your Testing, Grading, or Promotion
I'm sure just being there in the capacity of uke will help them a lot. If they're a higher grade there's probably not much you can do in the way of helping them with kata and kihon but partnering them for sparring and bunkai work would help them out. I've worked with someone who was taking their 4th dan and basically spent the entire time being thrown and punched and kicked. -
19" on my desktop and a 15" for my laptop. I do have a 17" TV at home which I hookup as a 2nd monitor but I'm in student digs at the moment and can't fit it on this stupidly small desk I'm forced to work on.

Yeah I really wanted to watch the boxing and some judo. But couldn't afford it. As it is the tickets I got for me and the family are £500, got to add travel, hotel, food on top of that and its getting a little expensive I also really wanted to watch the gymnastics and diving but would have to take out another student loan for that! Hopefully we'll get tickets. Don't know though because I was reading a report on BBC where a lot of people had commented that they'd applied for the less popular events because they were cheaper and they just wanted to see something. Been checking my bank account daily though

Cheers for the advice guys. I should probably update you on this. TBH not getting much pain at all now. Only if I really try to rotate it round and sometimes on blocks if I rotate too far/grip too far. Think it just needs rest really. I've not had much chance to train over the past few weeks and I think that's helped. Only thing stopping me from resting it fully is its might writing hand and I need to be writing lots as have exams coming up. Think it should be back to normal soon.

I've seen that too but sadly its photoshopped. In the film cinderella had blonde hair and the ugly sister's had different yellow and pink dresses. Princess Beatrice's hat is being auctioned on eBay for charity: http://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/e11030.m43.l1123/7?euid=ea068c3e512141fe9bb34a0429ad5c15&loc=http%3A%2F%2Fcgi.ebay.co.uk%2Fws%2FeBayISAPI.dll%3FViewItem%26item%3D230620500557%26ssPageName%3DADME%3AB%3AEF%3AGB%3A1123 If anyone wants to go halves on it, drop me a PM See I'm not sure about how much of a drain on the economy it was. Sure that money could have been spent on things that were a lot more worthwhile but it'd be interesting to know how much money was made. All those tourists travelling to London, quite a few from overseas too. And all the merchandise that was sold. Probably wont bother watching it again. I did catch the end of it, when they came out on the balcony, and watched the highlights. Watching it after the fact somehow isn't as exciting as watching stuff live

You don't seem to have a very good opinion of TKD, I feel I should fight in its corner a little! We're not all tippy tappy, point sparrers. Unfortunately there are lots of bad schools but you can certainly find good strong hard sparring and self defense schools from both ITF and Kukki TKD if you look in the right places. Not all schools are competition orientated. TBH you'll be hard pressed to find something that isn't bound by any rules. Every style, no matter how hardcore or how real for the street is going to have some rules, purely for the safety aspect. Can't have you gouging chunks out of each other on a regular basis. Dobbersky's suggestion for styles are good; knockdown Karate is what I would have said since you want hard contact. If that's all you can find in your area using Google, that might be all there is. Unless you start looking around for those less advertised, word-of-mouth schools.

You all can now see what my life has turned into as of late!! Someone HELP!! Nothing wrong with watching it; this is the stuff Disney films are made of I'm by no means a fan of the monarchy but was pretty cool getting to watch all the pagaentry and all that.

Its ultimately up to whether you feel you want to do it. You're teacher can suggest its time but if you don't want to, that's your choice. I waited a couple of extra years to do my 3rd even though my instructor wanted me to grade. Same as Kruczek I was leaving to go to uni. My minimum time was up and he kept asking me because he wanted me to leave the school with the appropriate rank. Pretty much every time I saw him he'd ask. But I kept saying no because for starters I was doing my A-levels and didn't have the time to dedicate to grading prep. Also didn't want to go to uni having just gotten a 3rd dan but not knowing all the new forms and stuff and having to try to teach myself all that. Better for me to go and keep practicing what I know rather than spending time learning new stuff but learning it wrong. I eventually caved to his nagging but felt better for waiting the extra time. My sister is in a similar situation, she's been a 2nd dan for 3 years but doesn't intend to grade any time soon even though she meets the time and standard requirements. The way I see it, most of us are in martial arts for the long haul. There's only a finite amount of dan grades so might as well spread them out over your journey to keep it interesting and keep you motivated. No fun if you get it all out of the way in your first 20 years.

Did anyone apply for tickets? Anyone apply for any of the TKD, Judo, Boxing or wrestling? I only applied for the TKD, that session with the men's +80kg and women's +65kg semi-finals and finals. Hopefully will get tickets..
