  1. Or perhaps you've never stabbed anyone in the butt? That must be it. Next time I stab someone, I'll let you all know which term comes to mind.
  2. Could be a regional thing
  3. We've also got toucan, pelican, puffin and pegasus crossings too Never used that one before
  4. That's gas can for those of you in America. Since some of you liked to point out the American English/British English language differences in other threads, thought you might like this: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-14201796 Funny thing is I find myself using more and more of these nowadays.. I attribute it to talking to you lot on here
  5. Condolences to Suzuki Sensei's family and friends and to all his students
  6. I vote for this. heh just for the record, I neither endorse nor condone this. Wouldn't want this to come back and haunt me when I'm mega-rich and famous. Don't want the papers printing that I suggested "Bumfights 2011".

    Karate Kids?

The problem may not be the 5 year old children learning karate, but a lack of understanding of how they should be managed. Far better ways to keep children interested than giving them push ups. Good point, kids are kids and respond better to positive encouragement than negative discipline. These kids have barely started school, can't treat them the same as adults and teach them in the same way. theJCism, don't know if you have any opportunity to teach the kids, but there are some great threads and posts kicking about in the Instructor Central part of the forum on how to teach MA to kids. Like this post by Jeffery which is great: http://www.karateforums.com/teaching-kids-vt40325.html

  9. MMA Fights are the only way you can control for differences in weight, height, strength, experience, etc. For an academic study of this nature to be published, you would need to control numerous factors, which you cannot do if you use Youtube fights. The ethics are questionable but a better control group would be to pull people off the street and then match attributes like height and weight and make them fight whilst you watch Using MMA fighters introduces extra variables. When looking at how likely it is that a fight goes to the ground, you can't use MMA fights because a good proportion of the fighters want the fight to go to the ground. They're trained in BJJ (or something similar) and can attempt to win the fight via submission. You can't control the fights themselves on YouTube but you can be selective about what you include in your sample. So do a sample where you've selected fights where the participants are roughly the same height and weight. Or control the variable like location so do a sample where its only fights on a hard surface such as concrete.
  10. Good idea how about milk bottles filled with water? or even jerry cans? got a handle so could even use it in kettle bell exercises.
  11. How about chucking in some limitations, like penalty cards? We do this at training so sometimes person A can only attack/defend with kicks (e.g. hands tied behind their back) and person B can only use hands. Or like today in training for one bout everything had to be aerial with at least a 180 turn in it Not practical but still fun and tires you out fast. Or put a hoop on the floor and one person has to keep one foot in it all the time.
  12. Hows it not effective with gloves on? What are you striking with? Thought most MMA gloves allowed you to do pretty much anything. Just curious.
  13. I suggest that perhaps you guys contact the author. He may have tried to include data such as this. Obviously he might have had difficultly gathering information on thing such as education and occupation but he could have included estimates on age and size based on what was seen in the video. 300 videos is not a bad sample size and if you're not going to collect it from YouTube, where else can you get the data from? I agree with Justice in that its as good a source as any. Just got to read the report with that in mind.
  14. Backfist vs jab depends on a whole lotta stuff. Two totally different ways to generate power. The backfist can be more powerful but it has disadvantages too which is why I personally prefer the jab: - for the jab you can basically keep a guard and fire it off whilst keeping yourself behind your arm, with the backfist you come round and in arc so have to open yourself up - jab's quicker - lots of types of jabs (JCavin already alluded to them) and the jab is a great opener for other techniques, backfist just seems a bit more limited - can retract the jab quicker (ready to do another one)
  15. Ditto Don't think you can deny BJJ's dominance over the ground game. Those guys have it sussed.
  16. Actually that reminds me of a drill we use to speed up the roundhouse (and any other kick) to reduce telegraphing and the chance of getting caught. Basically it just forces you to change the trajectory of the kick slightly so the angle the leg takes decreases. You're most likely to get caught when doing a wide angle kick, i.e. one that comes around and in, the more traditional way to do it. Its easy enough to step in on the inside of the kick and then check or grab it when you can see it coming around like this. Cutting the movement shorter like making a roundhouse more like a Brazilian kick does sacrifice a bit of power as you're not getting as much mass in it, but it is a much faster kick and more difficult to read because its not coming around and in. The path of the leg also means its harder to step inside the leg and grab. Same principle with any kick. The back kick is another good example. Bringing the kick in wide, with the knee high and moving around is easier to spot that something that comes straight up from the floor. The drill for that is simple enough. If you want to roundhouse with your right leg, put your right shoulder next to a wall. Can't go around and in because the wall restricts your movement so you have to come knee up and the rotate at the very end. Have someone there with a focus pad and you can work any kick like this. Start off further away from the wall and then keep coming in closer until you're right on it. Could also work on how your kicks start. Go with Superfoot Wallace's method of having the same chamber for all kicks. Your opponent then has even less time to recognize what he's being hit with and less time to think about grabbing you. So forgetting for the moment what happens when you're grabbed, in order to reduce the chances of grabbing, try working on changing how your kick is coming in to reduce telegraphing.

    Karate Kids?

Probably need a separate class for kids of that age. 5 year olds have barely started school and aren't ready for the way most MA classes run. They need a higher teacher/helper : student ratio and the class structure ideally needs to be different. Maybe suggest something to your instructor?
  19. Awesome LP! Congrats! Hope everything works out and you get a class sorted out.
  20. If you're 100% sure about it, speak to them about it and then expel them. Its bad enough if a student talks bad about their dojo/instructor but if a sempai/instructor does it, its inexcusable. And make sure everyone in your school knows that that isn't acceptable behavior. You don't have to name names but make it clear that its not something you expect from your blackbelts or students at your school.
  21. Most TKD guys will go strong side forward. Our philosophy is that you want to disable them as quickly as possible with as few strikes as possible so strong side leading because then your opponent is coming in onto your strong side as they close the distance and you can just pick them off.
  22. Nice one datguy. Regardless of the punishment you get, you ended that fight. Especially with a group of them you could have come off pretty bad if they'd all decided to jump in. I'd also go get your story in there first. If the guy has reputation for being the "tough guy" then they'd probably take that into account anyway. Your school have cctv?
