White Belt

White Belt (1/10)

  1. I know here you're coming from. I returned to training 18 months ago after an absence of 26 years. This time around I've thrown my ego out of the window and train for me, not those watching me. I don't care what belt colour I wear. As long as I'm improving (slowly), keeping fit and injury free, that's what counts most in my book. Hope it all goes well for you!
  2. Sorry I dont. I'm wondering if it was later merged with another magazine called 'Oriental Arts' because I remember buying a magazine called 'Karate and Oriental Arts' in the 70s. That was published by Paul H Crompton who also published some of Sensei Kanazawa's early kata books (which I still have).
  3. I asked the company if the price was a typo. They replied saying that it wasn't, and that they had sold an early Fghting Arts International magazine for over £1,000. I can only conclude that I'm in the wrong job! But then, if I had £150 to blow the 'profile' I seek may turn out to be only ten sentences.
  4. Correct makiwara training is great for developing your techniques. I did a lot of this when I was around 19, but found it had its social downside. While in the lunch queue at work one of the serving staff noticed my scuffed knuckles from the previous day's training and remarked loudly to everyone that I'd been fighting. Nobody would sit with me in the canteen after that. Also, it was a chick repeller having 'damaged' looking knuckles. On a lighter note. I was once training on the makiwara with Enoeda sensei training next to me on the adjacent makiwara. He caused his to snap and the broken section to fly forward and out of the open window. Scary stuff....
  5. Which Manchester area are you refering to? Great Britain or the US? If it's the US... what state? Take care My apologies. I should have said Manchester, United Kingdom. Small minded of me.
  6. It wasn't just the kids who were scared of him. I found a magazine which profiled him. It's from 1969 but they want £150 for it! Can't think how they justify that. Maybe I'll strike lucky and find some kind soul who has it so I can take a trip down memory lane. http://data.pointclark.net/budopromotions/estore/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=23_29&products_id=220
  7. Anyone know of a Hapkido instructor in the Manchester area please?
  8. Thanks. I'm enjoying starting off as a white belt again. It's taken years off me.
  9. I pre-date the print works and trained at his original dojo in Owen Street, Stockport. Started my voyage in 1975 with Gary Brooks. Gary continued and became an instructor. Reached 3rd kyu with Enoeda/Tilley Sensei, but stopped training for various personal reasons. Got back into it a couple of years back and am currently studying for 1st kyu with Kancho Kanazawa's SKKIF. It's even harder now as my body won't respond. Sensei Tilley was/is a fabulous teacher with GREAT technique. I learned a lot from that man and owe him much. I'd still train with him if he'd teach me. Happy days ...
  10. I too trained with Sensei Jack Tilley. He now teaches kids in Hazel Grove. Two of his original assistant instructors, John and Alan Titley, have their own dojo at Wilmslow.
