Personally I liked XP Windows, and XP Office. The only thing that really, really, REALLY, annoyed me is the registration process. Every time I installed a new hard disk or make modifications to ram or change my motherboard or had to reinstall the software due to virus attacks, I would have to phone up Microsoft and ask for an unlock code so I could use the software I purchased. Last week was the final straw when I installed an larger hard disk into my computer and had to beg for the unlock code again, and was given the third degree by someone at Microsoft who was obviously having a bad day and decided to take it out on me. I politely told him to shove his (or should I say my) unlock code where the sun don't shine and vowed never to purchase another Microsoft product again. If it wasn't for the fact that XP office and XP windows cost me around $1000 AU, I would have thrown them in the bin. As it is, I have gone back to Windows ME and Office 97 until Microsoft give up their stupid registration system or someone develops comparable products used by the majority of the people around the world. (I'm not holding my breath) I have personally spent around $12,000 AU (50 cents US I wonder if Mr Bill Gates does martial arts?

How long does it take to become a blackbelt?
John G replied to coltmakai's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I think its club dependent in our ITF TKD club is no maximum between belts to however, there is a minimum requirement. White belt to yellow tag: 2 months Yellow tag to yellow belt: 2 months Yellow belt to green tag: 3 months Green tag to green belt: 3 months Green belt to blue tag: 3 months Blue tag to blue belt: 3 months Blue belt to red tag: 3 months Red tag to red belt: 3 months Red belt to black tag 4 months Black tag to first-degree Black belt: 6 months First-degree black belt to second-degree black belt: 2 years Second-degree to third degree: 3 years Third degree to forth-degree: 4 years (international instructor) Forth degree to fifth degree: 5 years Fifth degree to sixth degree: 6 years Sixth degree to seventh degree: 7 years (master) Seventh degree to eighth degree: 8 years Eighth degree to ninth degree: 9 years (grandmaster) Traditional Wing Chun is skills and knowledge based with no minimum time frame with the exception of a minimum four months training period when grading to instructor. I don't know the time period or the requirements to grade to master, and there is only one grandmaster (William Cheung). The grading structure is: White sash: level 1.0, 1.1, 1.2 Light blue sash: level 2.0, 2.1, 2.2 Medium blue sash level 3.0, 3.1, 3.2 Dark blue sash: level 4.0, 4.1, 4.2 Light brown sash: level 5.0, 5.1, 5.2 Dark brown sash: level 6.0, 6.1, 6.2 Black sash: level 7.0, 7.1, 7.2 Grey sash: level 8.0, 8.1, 8.2 Light green sash: level 9.0, 9.1, 9.2 Gold sash (instructor): level 10 (4 months minimum training) Red sash (master): Level 11.1, 11.2, 11.3, 11.4, 11.5, 11.6 -

Wing Chun
John G replied to --'s topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
Just to expand a bit on what Mo_Tseu was saying Some of the principles of traditional Wing Chun are: ….Avoid fighting force with force… Deflect the punch rather stop it, body positioning and timing is important here else you cop one right in the head. Wing Chun practitioners rarely step backward, they generally move diagonally forward left or right (usually on the opponents blindside) for an offensive manoeuvre. In addition, side stepping left or right when executing a defensive manoeuvre or making room for a kicking strike. …Operate on the central line… This is the practitioners attacking zone (if your caught in here your dead meat) it's the imaginary line the practitioner faces his opponent. If you placed your arms out straight, out in front of you, cross at the wrists, and then move your arms to the lower, middle and upper levels you get a feel for where the zone is (pretty up close and personal hey?). It's the aim of the practitioner to keep you in that zone while he rearranges your face and destroys your organs. ….Synchronise two arms at the same time… Unlike the traditional block then strike method used in martial arts like Karate and TKD. Wing Chun practitioners use a step forward/deflect/strike action in one movement. The power of the strike is obtained from the shift of body mass utilising footwork (if you've ever seen a one inch punch you know what I mean). ….Focus on the elbows and knees before contact…. I was taught in TKD to focus on opponents eyes and use your peripheral vision to take care of the rest. In Wing Chun I'm taught to look at the opponents elbows and knees (actually somewhere in between), the theory here is that the elbow moves 3 to 4 times slower than the fist, therefore you can predict an punch/kick a lot quicker, and attack a lot sooner. ….Use contact reflex during exchange… This is an awesome principle, which takes years to develop, imagine knowing what your opponent's next move will be at the point of contact. Just by feeling, the opponents' vibrations and force when deflecting a punch or a kick you can predict what he is going to do next. These are just some of the principles you learn.. Anyway I've waffled on long enough and its time to go to bed. Hope this helps answer some of your questions. BTW: The Wing Chun I practice is developed by Grandmaster William Cheung (World Wing Chun Kung Fu Association) -
Your correct Hiya, The best martial art is the one you are currently doing. Wing Chun in Iowa?
John G replied to Knuth's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
Knuth, Find out what forms (patterns/katas) he does, or who his instructor was. This could give us a bit of a clue to what style of Wing Chun he does. -
