loyalty to my Instructor/husband
Azula replied to Akaratechick's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
i suggest you hug your husband and tell him your his other half. -
I'll see(regardless of rank) if i can train with higher belts as well as low belts just so i won't get bored doing the same things since i go 5 times a week and not 2 or 3.
-
aye, so is the purpose of life. Which many do not understand.
-
i know but this place is the best around my area, until i move out of the area then i don't know what i'll do.
-
I think im just going to have to train other things on my own and perfect those of which i do at my dojo.
-
btw, im not saying im exceptional, all im saying is i take it seriously but many do not, and i don't think i deserve to be "held back" because of some people who could care less. I ne'er said i was good or bad.
-
im sure, because i've even been told by almost all of the instructors.
-
I don't care much about the ranks, but the ranks matter as far as what you're learning. So if the others don't progress and im yellow, i'll be stuck doing the same things over and over. As opposed to if i were a green belt, maybe i could learn new things. Yellow belts aren't expected to do too much and thus aren't thought.

First of all, im a fast learner and I take what I do seriously. Meaning, when I started my karate around 4-5 months ago, I would come 5 times and also train the other 2 days at home or at the park. When we didn't do a few of the stretches i would do them at home. Anyhow, after a while until now, I progressed much faster than most others in my group, being the beginner/intermediate class as im a yellow belt 8th kyu(skipped 1st yellow at 9th). What angers me is that there are both adults and kids at our classes, and most of the kids are not doing it by choice and could care less, so they come about 1-2 times a week, and so do some of the adults. Because of these individuals my training is left behind tremendously. We do partner work and kumite, as well as practice Katas together, and I was doing better than some of the green belts, and at my dojo green is right before brown, which is before black. There is nothing more I can learn with some of the class(not all) being so behind. Since I train in the headquarters[where the grandmaster (also founder of the art]resides, there is an offer to train with Soke for an hour class and i've to pay somewhere around 50$ which is too much. What can I do?

More muscle compared to fat also makes one much faster, but you're right about the tenseness. My karate instructors always tell me that im too tense and that i need to be more response, and i ne'er asked them why, but now i know why.

About the style(s) used in "the karate kid"
Azula replied to Azula's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
there is a diffence to almost any attack im aware of...stupid movies. -
Gosoku-ryu: Gosoku-ryu style karate is a hard/fast style and is mixed with Goju-ryu and Shotokan karate, Judo and Aikido. It is a form of karate with more grappling and usually more faster. 55% punches 45% kicks. It is of Japanese origin and it's used mostly for 'self-defense'. Also a very traditional art. Katas are from Shotokan karate, stances are a mixture of Shotokan and Goju-ryu. It also has weapons training in it, such as the short sticks, and the swords, and many more japanese weapons(i don't remember all the names in japanese). I say the art works well for both short and tall people.

I do everything you said except for weight lifting, because i like to be skinny/muscle and fast. I currently run everyday, I do Judo and Aikido pushups everyday, i work on my stomach in any way possible until i nearly pass out, i do almost everything to get my body in perfect condition. And i never have even tried and boxing/kick boxing, i've only done Traditional Japanese martial arts, which they train me very hard. Flexibility is also very important to training the muscles, and in martial arts im sure there is much more of that then in boxing. Now answer one question... do you think Lewis(by the time he's 70 years old) would probably kick a martial artist's butt?

Karate + [?]
Azula replied to Whitefeather's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
I do a style of karate with some more grappling in it, but i also started Aikido(which im pretty sure is considered a grappling art) a few weeks ago. I think the two are very good complimentary forms. Grappling arts usually don't work too good alone. If you're a big, then Judo is pretty good most probably(as far as i've heard), but if you're not too big then Aikido is a better form of grappling. I sujest you do a lot of research on different styles and how they work together maybe you'll find a better grappling art to add to your karate. -
I say it matters only one the fighting style each fighter knows. For taller fighters Muay Thai, boxing, kickboxing, and some grappling forms would be good, but for short people like me Aikido does the thing. Aikido is perfect for a short person against a taller person. A short person has an advantage if he/she begins the fight offensively and moving inward, being quick, as Soke always says, smaller fighters need to be quick and agressive, while taller fighters need to keep their distance for reach. So i say the more experienced and trained in the more useful art(for him/herself) would have the advantage. BUT... if none of the two fighters did not know how to fight and they just threw a street fight, i'd have to say the taller would win simply because of physical strength and more reach.

Also...which type of karate style uses the most animal stances and katas?
-
I've always been wondering what the point of having so many of the animal stances in many Martial Arts including some styles of Karate are. I've only learned the Horse stance thus far, and not to be ignorant, but i don't see how it would be useful in a fight. I've always been interested in the animal stances and i think they are pretty cool, but i don't know how they can be useful in a fight. How would you do some of the kicks and punches that you normally do in a free stance, when in a horse stance, or cat stance, tiger, etc... The whole stance of the legs and body is totally different.

Seagal is a beast
Azula replied to getawaytkd's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
Aikido is one of the slower martial arts styles and takes a very long time to actually work correctly. I'd say about 6 years, if not more, of training Aikido is enough to defend oneself. Also, Aikido is not too effective left alone, it's usually a complimentary martial art to be worekd with another form. Steven Seagal himself wasn't only a 7th degree black belt in Aikido, but he had ranks in i think 3 other styles including Judo, Shito-Ryu karate, and another style im not sure of. What i'd like to do is use Aikido's locking techniques in place of some of Karate's blocking techniques. -
