  1. What about typical behavior on the show ? Do you think their behavior is a generalization for all 18-34yr old Mixed martial artists or just Ultimate fighter ones, and how does the general public know the difference if they aren't martial artists themselves.
  2. thnaks for your input. I wonder if the general population adopts the idea that a school that teaches Mixed martial arts will turn them into the Ultimate Fighter. We know better but do they? I am wondering if the differences are that obvious to anyone else than me. I know that not every serious athlete acts like they act on UF.
  3. Hi everyone! been awhile since I've posted, but I need some input if possible. The paper I'm wriiting will explore the similarities/contrasts of what is portrayed on Ultimate Fighter compared to traditonal martial artists. It would be helpful if everyone who has seen it could give an opinion or describe something that is/isn't typical. I want to be as objective as possible and you guys can be of great help, so please comment It was assigned today and due Thursday.
  4. I just started training in shotokan, and have done TKD for about seven years now, I teach TKD, but wanted to train as a student again. I kick higher than most in my class, but they really empasize kicking hard, something I didn't really learn in TKD until about blue belt, and also when I trained for black belt I kicked thai pads instead of shields. An instructor should not talk negative about other arts, period. You should ask him exactly what he meant, for your benefit, he may have meant nothing by it, as intstructors, we sometimes blurt out things, that we don't mean much by, and aren't aware of how a student is taking it.
  5. I'm glad you got your belt Shotokan-kez!! I have my name on one side (in English) on the other side - My stripe is actually a scripture 2 Tim 4/7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith
  6. I agree with Jeet Kune Do, showing the public what you can do in Martial Arts, once you set your mind to it is pretty cool. I am still amazed at how cool they think it is. I always use an elbow because it's easier for me, I have about a 5in. wrist, so an elbow is safe. It is one of the easiest breaks but people are so impressed They can't imagine doing this, that's where we have to convince them that they can and they will!!
  7. One solid answer-YES. I have ADD, and as a student it was very difficult to maintain focus, especially when we stopped moving. Drills that require alot of concentration were a huge challenge. If my instructor talked for a long time, I would only get a few words. Now, as an Instructor, I teach kids. I keep them moving always, I use music alot, never talk for too long, and always make sure they look me in the eye when I'm speaking to them. Teaching presents unique challenges for the ADD person, like yelling out commands backwards, or getting confused when teaching a kata, Talking to parents can be tricky, as I have a tenancy to get distracted and walk off during a conversation. but Martial Arts has given me confidence in myself, and I have insight into the ADD student and feel MA is the best choice for them.
  8. thanks for the ideas, I never thought about a nature walk, or relay race but I will add that to my list for options. thanks again
  9. This year is our 25th Annual Summer Camp, it is one day of fun and instruction for both kids and Adults. I am instructing the kids part of the camp and am looking for ideas to keep them entertained, so far I have An Obstacle Course Games-Sensai Says, Red Ninja, and focus mitts using math Art project-make your own karate notebook for notes at class Something with water balloons, having figured out yet the camp is outside at the lake 8)so I need some ideas that we can use to make the day fun, one they won't forget for a long time. Any ideas will be greatly appreciated. I've gotten most of mine from this forum , so a huge thanks to the MA family at KarateForums
  10. Passion-definitely, An unmotivated teacher will have you rolling your eyes and looking at your watch more than anything. If you are excited about teaching, your students will show you how excited they are. Skill is important too, age maybe not so important. Before I achieved Black Belt I went to a class where a 17yr old taught most of the time. I'm 42 and I had no problem taking lessons from him, guess it just depends on the person.
  11. Everyone has made some very valid points. Jaymac is right about it not being much different except for the prayer after class or before. You can find many martial artists who aren't Christians but they act more "Christian" than some I know. I know the Bible doesn't teach pacifism, it teaches to stand up for what is right, that is why there where so many wars spoken of. Being a mom of a 17yr old and a 12yr old both who are trained in MA, I wouldn't let them do it, if I thought it was dangerous. My daughter, Brie played Basketball, a non-contact sport this year and I saw more foot injures, knee injuries, head butts, braces injuries to the mouth, (no mouthpieces) than I've seen in a couple of years in the dojo!!! Yikes, and we're the violent ones my point is, first hats off to you, for trying to please your mother. She's lucky to have a son like you. Being a MA takes courage, she should be very proud, study where you are comfortable, He will lead you in the right direction. When I first started TKD, the instuctor wasn't a Christian, he has since converted but the material and his teaching has not changed a bit. He is still the same, I know because he's my husband. He is a little bit more compassionate than he was before. He moved the dojo to place with air conditioner, in the summer it got over 100 degrees where we were training, so it was nice to have AC. before he had the attitude of "it's only 100 degrees in here you don't need a drink of water, you've only been working out for an hour, you whimp" needless to say, we only had about six students, now we have about thirty.
  12. that happens to me all the time....maybe cuz I'm ADHD, who knows, but it's cool when it does. I don't get Blackbelt magazine, but I just finished the newest MA Success, and it was an awesome issue. I read all the articles in one sitting. For someone who can't sit still very long, thats good
  13. Yes, we are a Christian Martial Arts class, all of blackbelts are Christians, however we would accept any Blackbelt into our class or organization based on their character, not religion. We feel the spiritual aspect is of ultimate importance for a martial artist. I'm not sure about all of our students state of heart, but they seem very comfortable with praying at the start and close of class. I pray for them, and if the opportunity arises will share my beliefs, but I understand they are here to learn the martial arts. When I first started I didn't understand the bowing either, but it is a respect symbol, not saying that they are your master, because we have only one. But respect is paramount in our lives, and the Bible tells us to respect authority. Pretty Simple when you break it down. I know there are churches that teach martial arts, so you could look into that, or when looking at other dojos, just ask if the religious aspect of martial arts is taught and if so, what does that mean to them? As for the books, Frank Peretti is great, read some Ted Dekker, you will be pleasantly entertained. A good place to start is House, by both Ted and Frank.
  14. There are some pretty cool Christian fiction books out there. Ted Dekker or Frank Peretti are both awesome authors. My entire family are computer geeks and martial artists. Go figure. We have five computers in our house, so we have to be careful, especially me cuz I like to be alone and I love computers, so they may feel like they can't reach you when you are on the computer, and may have a hard time understanding Martial Arts. My kids attend a Christian school and some of the moms don't understand why I love MA and think it's about violence when in fact it's about peace. We pray before and after each class. So I am glad you respect your parents, your life will be long, but can understand why you are frustrated as well. We only want the best for our kids, but communicating that to them is the hardest task.
  15. I think you are right, and as soon as my fractured foot heals, I can get serious about my training again.
