  1. Miyahira is the former head of style. He stepped down(last year? early this year?) and was replaced by Ishikawa(sp....I'll reference it somtime).
  2. St. Brigid Shorin Ryu Dojo Member of Okinawa Shorin Ryu Karatedo and Kobudo Association Baltimore, MD, USA Daniel Simmons Sensei, 7th Dan; Will Adams Sensei, 7th Dan
  3. Yes. If you're entering in a kata division, do not show any sign that you messed up. Look confident. If you do make a mistake, do not start over. Continue as though nothing happened. Take your time. Prove to them that you have control.
  4. What sort of Organization(s) is/are your classes affiliated with? Either a master contact or organization name will do. I'll start: Okinawa Shorin Ryu Karatedo and Kobudo Association Formerly headed by: Chibana, Miyahira, Ishikawa Our originating link is Hanshi Takashi Miyagi, who taught both my sensei and his sensei(sensei's sensei), as well as trained under both the former head of style and current head of style.
  5. Wow. 11 weapons kata for Shodan. We only require 2, but 31 other empty handed kata. We study Shobayashi Shorin Ryu, as I see you study Kobayashi. Even if you take the Shudokan kata out, we still have about 23 kata from Shorin Ryu--sounds like we have about the same empty hand kata. That's a lot of weapons work. Sounds fun, though. With respect, Sohan Well, there is a five year minimum to shodan from ju-kyu. They need to have something to fill it up . Also, that still leaves plenty of kata, especially weapons kata, for after shodan. The "BlackBelt-Only" weapons include tonfa, kama, eku bo, more bo, and more nunchuku, not to mention several more empty handed kata. Shobayashi Ryu, I've heard of it.....breifly....Just out of curiousity, does your Shorin Ryu class have any contacts in Okinawa? Methinks me just had an idea for a new thread.
  6. Let's see if memory serves... To get green belt: Kihon I-V Nafanchin I-III Siesan To get brown: Pinan I-V Itotsu no Passai To get shodan Matsumura no Passai Kusanku Sho + Dai Chinto 5 Sai kata 3 Nunchuku kata (uncertian on exact number) 3 Bo kata(uncertain on exact number) So assuming that I remembered correctly, that makes 19 empty handed and 11 weapons kata for Shodan
  7. Finishing up Pinan Godan. Next will be Itotsu no Passai.
  8. Hmmm...We do kata the same way they do it in Okinawa(We visit them every few years, every few years they visit us). Kata should not be modded to achieve greater athletic results. Someone that want's more exercise should invest in a wieght set.
  9. We do it with every new kata, and usually one out of four classes is dedicated to it.
  10. Sai, Tonfa, Eku Bo, Bo, Nunchuku, Kama. Nothing fancy, just what is used in Okinawa
  11. There is a Jodo instructor not too far from me. It seems to me that the jo evolved as the Japanese weapon that is used to counter kenjutsu. All of the jodo's techniques are designed to counter a swordsman from what I've seen of it. Just my two cents
  12. "That seemed too easy." Sensei then proceded to add me into his second sparring match of the evening, the first being him vs. the only Nidan in the class, the second being the Nidan and myself vs. him. Within a second of the match starting he had both thrown me into the ground and scored three points against me and two vs. the Nidan. Sensei then said, "Oh well. Dave[he's the Nidan] you did much better then last time. And as for you Pat[me] , you responded better then most students of your rank in Okinawa. They would have shown fear. Guess you mastered hiding it." I might add that I was a white belt[ju-kyu] at the time.
  13. You suggest that in order to improve the interest at school that there needs to be more epic martial arts showdowns
  14. Love that Iron Horse. Have fun with Nainfanchin.
  15. I can ask, since I'm not too far away and Sensei knows a lot of different people.
  16. Katsuya Miyahira, another Kenmukei Bunkazi and successor to Chosin Chibana as (now)former head of the Okinawa Shorin-Ryu Karatedo and Kobudo Association
  17. I would disbelieve that a body for a large amount of tournaments would let that go. For example, let's say it was a tournnament by World Karate Federation or Okinawa Shorin-Ryu Karatedo Association, that can have competitors from countries world wide. If I entered a tournament in England, Japan, Okinawa, or wherever, in a gi by Kyota Company, I doubt that they would prohibit entry on the grounds that the gi was by the wrong manufacturer. Only a tournament sponsered by a company (Adidas in this case) could really pull that off.

    Oops!!!

A quick and speedy recovery to you.
  19. Agreed. A tape can teach you the basics of something, but an instructor and partner are required for pulling off a lot of things correctly.
  20. Or you can try telling him "Go away."
  21. That's never a good thing to hear.....Always know your instructor ahead of time.
  22. I'll add some big names: Takeshi Miyagi, Katsuya Miyahira, , Seitoku Ishikawa, Shigeru Takara, Seikichi Iha, Chojun Miyagi, Chokki Motobu, Chosin Chibana, Anbun Tokuda, Chotoku Kyan, Shinpan Shiroma, Anko Itosu, Sokon Matsumura, Kanga Sakugawa, and Shinjo Choken. There you go. Big names in karate.
  23. Have the list for the school(open handed only): Kihon I-V Naihanchin I-III Seisan Pinan I-V Passai sho(Itosu), dai(Matsumura), and kopassai sho Kusanku sho and dai Chinto Gojushiho Jion Unshu Nakanishi no kata Tensho Tensho is a Goju-Ryu kata. Miyagi Sensei is responsible for adding it. Sensei also said that the open handed kata have expanded since this list, but this is the "official" list that I was given, the things about ten years old.
  24. Posted Tensho and Kihon Godan. Kusanku will take a bit to upload, since I have to transfer that from VHS. But, it'll be done by my Sensei's sensei, Hanshi Takeshi Miyagi, so it should be worth it. BTW, Kihon Godan was created by my sensei, so it's probably unfamiliar to anyone who sees it. 25. list of your katas really confused me, i couldn't figure it out what style you practice, do you open your Seisan kata with 3 steps and closed fist?do you have a compelete list of your school's katas? I practice Kobayashi Shorin Ryu. All of the kata that I know of is as follows: Empty Handed: Kihon Shodan, Nidan, Sandan, Yondan, Godan Naifanchi Shodan, Nidan, Sandan Pinan Shodan, Nidan, Sandan, Yondan, Godan Itsou no Passai Matsumura no Passai Kusanku Sho Kusanku Dai Tensho Bo: Gyosho Sai: Ichi no sai I'll post a more complete list after I go back to class And as seisan goes, yes, it starts as you suggested. I've posted a video clip as done by my class here. I have video of several other kata if anyone wants to see them, but they must let me know before I post them on the interenet.
