  1. When most of us talk to each other, we don't use other languages for things like countries. We don't call Spain Espana, we call Deutzchland Germany (not sure about that spelling), and I would bet that the most of us don't pronounce Brasil and Chille correctly, etc, etc. If I say side kick instead of yeop chagi, it doesn't take anything away from it. The reason that most of the original Korean and Japanese masters taught in their own language is fairly simple: in most cases they probably could not speak very good English! (Just an opinion, could be wrong) I know the GM of my organization does not have the greatest English, and he is hard to understand from time to time. Personally, I think we read too much into the language of all of it. When I was in the ATA, there was no Korean spoken, and I still felt like I was learning TKD.
  2. That's cool. That may be the case. I just remembered from some strategy guides I had looked at for Tekken 3, and I think that is what they said. Maybe they borrowed from kyokushin. Incidentally, in the intro for Tekken 3, Hwa Rang does the Hwa Rang TKD form. I thought it was pretty cool.
  3. Sounds like a good deal to me. I had never heard about that before; always thought it was a striking art as well. I wish my TKD classes incorporated more groundwork. My grappling skills are very poor.
  4. Thats an interesting realization. If it were me, I would get off the ground every chance I got...I never did like wrestling.
  5. To quote UseoForce: Okay, first, yes, there are some people who should not have a gun. These are the same people who should not have a black belt or any martial arts training, so that point is irrelevent. The point I like to make when someone says that there are people who shouldn't be allowed to carry guns is this: "If they want to carry one, they are carrying one already." This is essentially in regards to criminals. By letting the law-abiding citizen have the right to carry, it levels the playing field a little bit.
  6. In most cases, I have seen titles given based on time in rank. In my current association, 3rd dans are certified instructors, 4th dans are Jr. Masters, and 5th dans and above are Masters. The Master and Jr. Master at my school have said that once a Master has two 5th dans under him, he is elevated to Grand Master, but I am not so sure about this one. In the article section was one written called "On Becoming A Master." I felt that the information contained in that article gave a very good idea of what becoming a Master should entail. Just my opinion, though. I know that in the ATA, one must be a 6th dan before they are eligible to apply for mastership, and then they have quite a process to go through before obtaining the prize. Last I knew, only 3 were granted the rank of Master in a year, but this may have changed. Aodhan would know for sure.
  7. Give Sohan a PM, I think he had some info on the subject. There was also and individual posting here on his current training in Thailand as a foriegner. Can't remember his username for the life of me, though.
  8. No, I don't think there is any difference, just two different spellings. I think. Maybe.
  9. Sorry, Sohan, I didn't see that previous post....wasn't trying to plaigarize!
  10. When at home I practice in whatever I am wearing. Suits, jeans, pajamas, etc This is a good idea, as you will most likely never have your gi on if you ever have to defend yourself. Practicing in regular clothing helps you to figure out how you can move, and what you can and can't do.
  11. This is not a bad idea at all. However, I don't think I would make it a requirement. I don't want to force someone to get a license like that if they don't want it, but I would tell them that it is not a bad idea. Also, parkerlineage, that is very potent common sense by your GM. I don't think you will hear many GMs say something like that.
  12. Since your at home, you could wear whatever you want. I don't usually wear my gi top, but I will wear the pants, as they are much nicer for kicking in. Also, if putting on the gi gets you revved up to work out, then go for it.
  13. That was a nice video. I liked the way the first few shots landed with the pronounced beats of the music. Nice touch.
  14. Wow, Sohan, I wish I had your schedule. Makes me jealous
  15. You mean, you actually tried it? Wow, cool, thanks! Tell me about it. I am a bulky boy, and doing that kind of workout makes this big boy want to hurl!
  16. Way to go. Perserverance pays off.
  17. You have essentially run the TKD gammet, haven't you?
  18. Another thought that I had is that you need to stretch in your side kick position. When you get into the splits, rotate to the right side and hold; they used to call this the "American splits" position. Hold there, and then rotate to the left.
  19. Ooh, ooh, kind of nasty, but how about an ear clap or box. Nail them both, ouch.
  20. It is a different society today. If you get into a shouting match with someone, and things get elevated, the next thing you know is you could be staring down the barrel of a gun, or looking at a shiny blade. I don't know about you, but I don't think I will take a chance, knife vs. hands, and definitly not gun vs. hands.
  21. That is kind of a cool idea. Think I'll keep mine now.
  22. Hmmm, very interesting. Didn't think about all the ficticious styles out there.
  23. Gotcha...does make sense...the only thing that is weird Shoan is that I can stretch it and it doesnt hurt or anything..then when I kick not even up to the width of how far I can stretch it.....I still get the pulling feeling....i would have guessed I would have really felt it when I stretch esp. since I can stretch it farther than when I am kicking....but your point does make sense...and I guess deep down inside I figured thats what it was, but wanted a second opinion.... Thanks for your input. That is because the stretch is an easy motion that is held. The kick is sudden shock to the muscle, and causes the reaction you are gettin. (I think ).
